Looking for Zhits family in US

Hi there,

I'm looking for descendants of the Zhits family in US. Their ancestors emigrated to US from Russia after revolution in Russia in 1917. In Russia they lived somewhere near Smolensk city. I'm a descendant of another branch of this family. The branches of the family communicated with each other until the World War II via mail, but after the WW II the survived Russian members (their village was destroyed by Nazis) of the family moved to other regions of USSR and all communication ceased. I've found some information about people with last name Zhits on this site (including one woman who emigrated from Russia) but I have no idea if they are indeed my relatives.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I am looking for descendants of the Zhits family too who emigrated to US from Ukraine at the beginning of 19 century. I am from this family and I am living in Skokie, Il from 1992. My father is 88 years old and he remembers some names from this family. Let me know if you think that we are from the same family.

Interesting - my grandfather told me that the people we're looking for emigrated to US in the beginning of the 20th centry, not 19th. I guess Zhits is a quite common Jewish surname, so we may or may not have common ancestors. My grandfather mentioned some names to me, but I've forgotten them since that (the thread was started 3+ years ago). I'll ask him for names, he's in perfect memory and can remember now what he remembered 3 years ago.

Your grandfather is right. Of cause it was in the beginning of the 20th century, not 19th. My mistake. Living in Russia I never hear this name. So I don’t think that Zhits is a common Jewish surname. I also have old picture of Zhits family dating earlier 30th. Can you ask your grandfather which names he remembers? And what is his name?
Zina.

Surnames: Zhits
I had a talk with the grandfather. His name is Leonid (79 years old), he had an older brother Boris (died in 1995). Their father's name was Illarion Nikitich Shaporenkov (b. 1888, of Russian descent), and the mother was Ida Efremovna Zhits(b.1889(8?), of Jewish descent). Hi doesn't remember any other names.

My grandfather was born in a village of Zakharyino of Hislavitchi region of Smolensk. I think the following link is a good description of what was going on there: http://admin.smolensk.ru/history/raion/book/-E-.htm (It's in Russian, but I believe you can read Russian). The grandfather told me that many Jews of Zhits surname have emigrated to US before the World War II, and his mother regularly received US-made goods and letters by mail.
