Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
Much of my family was born or lived in Jersey City (myself included). We go by the name Zanowic, but my father tells me this is likely a shortened version of a less pronouncable name. I recently consulted a family name book, and Zdanowicz was the closest match I found. If you think we could be related, I'd love to hear from you. Artist872@aol.com

Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
My husband's grandfather, Stephan ZDANOWICZ, was born on Feb 12, 1988 in Poland, now Bellarus, formally USSR. He immegrated to US on April 7, 1912 on the SS Campanello, arriving in NYC. Married Josephine SULZYCKI in St Anthony's RC Church in Jersey City, NJ on Feb 1, 1914. His parents in Poland were John ZDANOWICZ and Josepha Sosnowski ZDANOWICZ. He and Josephine had several children but only 2 boys made it to adulthood. Steven, my husband's father, and Joseph STANOWICZ. Stephan died in 1927, age 39 from TB. Steven was 11 and Joe was 4 and their mother spoke no English. Steven changed the spelling of the last name because he didn't like being called last in school. ZDANOWICZ AND STANOWICZ are both pronounced Stan'-o-wits. Before he died, Stephan moved his family to Hackettstown, Warren county, NJ. He is buried in Hackettstown Union Cemetery with his wife and children who predeceased him. His son, Steven became an MD and practiced in Hackettstown before his own death in 1981. Uncle Joe graduated from West Point, where he was an All American in football with Blanchard and Davis in 1941? (Google "Joe Stanowicz" and all his Army records will come up on the West Point site)Joe died out here in CA where we live also. Joe is buried in Arlington Nat'l Cemetery. He was also the collegate heavy-weight wrestling champ for four years at West Point. Only lost one match his feshman year. Joe had one child, Joe Jr, and Steven had 5 children, Steven F (my husband), Sientje, Frederick, (killed in car crash at 16) Mary and Stahsha. Sientje is the only one still in H'town. Mary/NC and Stahsha here in CA with us. Now Stephan also had cousins named Zdanowicz that stayed in Jersey City. John, Alexander, and ? and their decendents still live in NJ. If any of this rings a bell with you e-mail me and I'll dig out my Zdanowicz/Stanowicz files. Regards, Joy and Steve Stanowicz in CA

Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
My father, Leonard Formanek, had a cousin Conrad/Konrad Grinkiewicz who had a rooming house in Wildwood, NJ. This Conrad might be in his 80s, if he's still living. My father's father was Frank Formanek, whose father was Ignatz Furmanek. Any connection?

Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
Yes. My husbands father is Conrad Thomas Grinkiewicz. He is alive and lives in Port Charlotte, FL. He's 73. Any idea where Conrad T's parents were born? I know they are from Poland, but that's it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
Hi just in case you didn't get an answer, My grandmother was Josephine Formanek whose father was Ignatius Formanek and mother's name was Mary. Josephine married Alexander Zdanowicz around 1910. You can find them on the 1900 census living in Camden NJ. I had an Aunt Franny who was actually a cousin married to a Frank Formanek in Woodbury NJ. Most of the Ignatius Formanek land early on I was told was in Barnsboro NJ .

Re: Zdanowicz/Grinkiewicz/Grynkiewicz
Your grandmother, Josephine, was the older sister of my grandfather, Frank (not the Woodbury guy). Hello, cousin! Frank settled in Camden, just like Josephine did, but Viola, their sister, stayed on the farm in Barnsboro and raised a family there. I am trying to find out more about our great-grandparents, Ignatz and Maryanna, their siblings, and their parents from Poland. Not easy with the name change from Furmanek to Formanek, and the misspellings on the records!
