Thanks Mary. Since that posting I've discovered alot about my great grandfather and where he came from. Even about his family. He was from the village Lechnica. Spelled many different ways on ellisisland.org. I found out his mothers name was actually Catharina Tenussiak. He was born on Oct 19, 1876. There are no local relatives that I'm aware of. But thanks for the tip anyways. I appreciate it.

Hi Wendy,
I am related, through marriage, to a Zavada family from Export, PA. I believe they came from Sol, Slovakia, which is in Vranov nad Toplou (county) and Zemplin (province). Sol is the Slovak name and means 'salt'. It was known as Sokut in Hungarian, when Slovakia was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. There are a number of Zavadas that show up in the search of ship manifests at Ancestry and Ellis Island. I don't know if this helps at all.
Mary

I wonder if Anna Zavada was actually Anna Zawada from Poland. My husband's grandmother, Anna Zawada, immigrated from Poland about 1920 to live with her mother and stepfather Prosolowitz - I believe "mother and stepfather" to be Annie and Michael Preslovich. If you search Preslovich, a 1920 census pops up. (it comes up as Michael Poislovch) There is a Katherine (abt 10 yrs) who is listed as one of the children. Do you have any more information about the family?
Zavada

My grandfather was Jozsef Zavada who was Slovak. He lived and died near Lehighton, Carbon County, PA. At some point he changed his name to Joseph Smith. He shows an immigration date of 1899. He married my great grandmother, Mary Zygmunt who was an immigrant from Poland on Nov 24, 1904 at St Stanislaus Church in Manhatten, NY. He shows his residence on there as Lehighton PA. He shows his parents as John Zavada and Catherine (looks like) Dzeury Zavada. He worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad at the time. I am aware of the Zavada families that lived in Exeter and Ashley and wonder if he is from this family. He and Mary had six children. Mary, Joseph, Andrew, Thomas, Annie and John. Only Mary, Annie and John survived. I know that Joseph had a brother Thomas who moved to Chicago at some point. Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner....I don't check this that frequently. I'm afraid none of the names you mentioned mean anything to me, nor do I have any genealogical information about them. I do know that my Grandmother grew up in Passaic (she came from Kosice, Austria-Hungary originally) and her next door neighbors were Zavada's also. I assume that's how she came to meet Andrew, although Andrew Zavada's father was John Zavada (or Zavoda, depending on the source) and while he didn't live next door to my grandmother (she was living with her Mom, Katherine, and her step-dad, George Lipovsky), John presumably was related to the Zavada neighbors. But my Grandmother's maiden name was Szabo or Szabol, and her father died when she was a toddler. Other than those names, Zavada, Szabol, and Lipovsky, I don't have much information. I'd be curious to find out more, but I don't know where to begin.

I didn't way it previously, but please accept my condolences on your mothers passing.
I wanted to let you know there are some other similarities. Since I know almost nothing about my Zavada family, I'm looking for anything.
My grandmother had a brother named Andrew who passed as an infant. She had another brother, John, who died in 1993. On my great grandfathers death certificate it stated his fathers name was John. My great grandfather, Jozsef Zavada Smith, lived outside of Lehighton, PA when he died. But one of this daughters met a man who was a friend of the familys, married him and moved to where his family lived in Passaic New Jersey. Their last name was Kolek. Any other information you could tell me about this family could help. I know that Joseph had a brother Tomacz who moved to Chicago. My great grandmothers name was Maryanna Zygmundt an she was Polish. Also, I believe that Jozsef may have come from Zamuto, I think its called.

I don't think there's a direct connection, Wendy. My grandfather died in Philadelphia in 1920 where he lived with my Grandmother and their four daughters. My grandparents were married in Passaic NJ (actually met the day before the wedding as it was an arranged marriage). I believe he was the only child of Janos (John) Zavada/Zavoda who emigrated in the 1890's. But who knows? Perhaps there was a relative outside NJ or PA.

My great grandfathers name was Jozsef Zavada. When he came to the US in 1899 he changed it to Joseph Smith. I know that he had a brother, Thomas, who moved to Chicago shortly after arriving in this country. I know that one of my grandmothers little brothers who died as a young child was named Andrew. Joseph worked for the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1910 and bought a farm outside of Lehighton, PA where he lived until he died in 1930. He is buried in St Josephs cemetery in Jim Thorpe, PA. I wonder if they were related.

I would love to have any information that you have. My part of the Zavada line is very limited because of the death of both my grandmother, Doris Gletow and my grandfather Emil Zavada. Please contact me. I have a feeling that our roots might come from the same place.

Hi...I haven't seen any postings lately to this board so I wonder if anyone is still interested in this lineage. My grandfather was Andrew Zavada (spelled 'Zavoda' on the marriage license) who married Marita (aka 'Mary') Szabo in Garfield NJ around 1910. Mary came to America with her Mom (who had married a George Lipovsky) in 1897 or so. My Grandmom's marriage was an arranged one as they literally met each other the first time the day before their wedding. They moved to Philadelphia and had 4 daughters (my Mom among them) before he died in the worldwide flu epidemic of 1919. My grandmother (a widow at 21 with 4 girls) remarried and had 8 more children.
I'd love to hear from anyone who has anymore information.

Joe McCabe

I am looking for information on Anna Zavada who married Michael Preslovich. I don't know any dates or places for these two except that they had at least one daughter Catherine M. Preslovich on September 30, 1909 in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Catherine married Alfred Clair Borger on May 17, 1927 at Niagara Falls and they had 4 children: Alfred Walter, Violet Mae, Richard Ray, and Myra Jane. I know that Catherine died on February 18, 1986 and Alfred died on November 23, 1978. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have recently found that a gggrandfather was John Micknal married to Aggie Zavada. They had sons Kasmer, Herman and John. According to Kasmer's SS Application, he was born in East Lake Michigan on 2/25/1900, and in 1936 (when the form was completed) he was living in International Falls, Minnesota. His brother Herman was born 1895. Other than SS Applications, I have been unable to locate Aggie Zavada on any other records. Can anyone shed any information on this? My mother believes that John and Aggie may have been emigrants. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Zavada Family Tree

My mother was a Zavada. We just had a reunion on 7/22 in Plains, PA. We are working on the All In One Family Tree of John Zavada. Some settled in N.E. PA and some in NJ. I have a distant cousin who is working on this. His name is Frank Wojcik who works for Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, NJ. His e-mail is: fwojcik@lucent.com
Anything you can add would help. We hope to have the entire family tree on disk or cd within six months..hopefully. I would like to hear from you. Good luck, Robert Smera
