I am seeking spouse and descendants of Thomas Yuille, Tobacco Lord, son of Thomas Yuille and Elizabeth Bogle. He was born June 1723 Dunbarton,Scotland and died abt 1792 in Halifax City,Virginia. He had a brother John P Yuille born 1719 and died 2 Oct 1746 Williamsburgh,Virginia. They had many relatives who migrated to Australia from whom I am descended, via a maternal line.

Tony, I am descendent of Thomas through his son George, my great-great grandfather. We are just starting to research Thomas. Hope to be in Halifax County early fall so I will have more information. Do know that John is buried at Bruton Church in Williamsburg. Interested in why some members went to Australia. Some are also in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Linda, thanks for reply. I did know about John. I have a substantial amount of info on the Yuilles going back to about 1650 in Scotland and the descendants from the original John Yuille (Zuill) from Darleith in Dunbarton. I specifically wish to obtain descendants of Thos Yuille who went to Virginia and if some went to Nova Scotia, who was the first to go there. I have placed a gedcom file with the LDS website and hope to place one here (I am just updating some info). I have a number of families (apart from Yuilles) on my database - some 2400 names. If you would like th info I have on Yuilles please let me know here or drop me a line on the email.

Thank you I would like to look at any informatin you might have on the Yuilles particularly in Scotland. I am not sure of how many children Thomas had. My great-great grandfather George went to Campbell County ajoining Halifax and his home still stands. His sister Jane married Winston Henry son of Patrick Henry, the American patriot. Is 'Zuill' Celtic or early Anglo-Saxon? I have a photo that says Yuille home in Darlieth. May not still be standing this was early in the century.

Linda, I have loaded a gedcom file up onto this site. It contains many other families besides Yuilles. Darleith stilll exists as I have a recent photo but the building is a wreck as the roof has since fallen in. I believe the Zuill name was more Anglo than Celtic, but not certain.Thomas' father was also Thomas Yuille born 1681 and his mother was Elizabeth Bogle born 1688. His G-father was born in 1653 and was Alexander Yuille (Zuill). The gedcom file may take a few days to be available but it contains a lot of info you may be interested in.

Tony I will look in a few days for the file Thank you for taking the time to load it. I'm sure it will be interesting. You have already gotten my line back two more generations. Are their professions listed. Thomas was listed as a 'wright' on the manifest of the Commerce. I am not sure what that is exactly. Thanks again Linda

I'm not sure what a "wright" did however I do know the Yuilles were merchantmen and Thomas was a tobacco merchant. He also owned a ship which was captained by one of his brothers. The family were "well-heeled" as can be evidenced by the photo of Darleith. The biggest problem they were somewhat adventureous and hence ended up in many countries. They were well connected with other notable Scottish families - Cross;Buchanan;Murdoch; Dennistoun etc - and had connections with the West India Trading Company. Some mention can be found in the "Clyde Company Papers" a set of six reference books found in libraries.
