Thank you for starting the ball rolling on this query. And I thank all people for their postings/information regarding Princess Der Ling. For years I have wanted to research this person because I was named after her. Finally, I know a bit more. It's difficult to live up to my father's aspirations for naming me after her, but I shall surely try.

I went to Beijing for my honeymoon with my wife recently. I was very very fascinated by the entire ancient Chinese emperor era after visiting the Forbidden City. Their amazing lives and their rich histories baffles me till today. Immediately after i came home, I bought and watch Bertolucci's "The Last Emperor" all over again and did a lot of research and reading on the Internet pertaining to the emperors and empress of China. One name that kept popping up throughout my reading and research is Princess Der Ling.

I had not the previledge of reading the entire of her book (Two Years In the Forbidden City), but images and thoughts of a well-groomed, well-manner and fairy-tale like princess living in the times of ancient China while the monarchy is still at large haunt me. Partly I think her name and her book in written in English fascinate me the most. Also, her being a lady-in-waiting of one of the most politically 'dangerous' kingdoms of the world charmed me. Apart from that, how close she was to Empress Dowager Cixi actually sends tinggling down my spine (somehow I always fear and admire Cixi for her power and shrewd authority over the kingdom). My jaw dropped when i saw a photograph of Der Ling helping Cixi in a stroll down the Peony Hill!! She lived in an awesome era! And being photographed next to the most powerful woman of that time??!! Unbelievable!

I am very very touched and impressed with everyone's effort in tracking Der Ling's "post-forbidden city" life down. I think one of the thread author mentioned she found an autographed book by her. Did you buy it? Otherwise, where can i find it? I am keen to be the owner of this book.

The link of the actual book with photographs fascinates me till no ends. Check it out: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/images/modeng/public/DerYear/D...

I agree, she lived in a very vibrant and impressive era and her charisma charms me till today, almost 70 years after her death. I am also keen to know how one thread author knows so much about her life in LA and also her untimely death. Care to share with us?

Thank you everyone!

According what I found on the Chinese websites (there seems to be a fairly strong interest in her, as the Chinese pop culture is strangely transfixed on the old dynasties, the Manchu in particular), Princess Der Ling died due to an auto accident on Nov. 22 1944 in Canada. It was also mentioned that she and her husband was separated for a long time due to marriage difficulties.

Her life has been the subject of a novel titled "Princess Der Ling" and last year the Chinese began making a 26-episode TV series of the same name.

Thank you; Re: the death of Princess Der Ling

Dear everyone -

Der Ling did not die in Canada - she was struck by a grocery truck outside the south gates of UC Berkeley, and died later that night in hospital. I have written a biography of Der Ling that is to be published in China next spring. If you would like to know more please do email me.

Dear Grant,

Thank you! I am so impressed with the details you have.
I really would like to know more of your biography on Der Ling. How do i know more? Do you have a PDF version or a softcopy that i may read?

Thank you so much, Grant, I am happy to hear of your effort. Curious, how do you do research on someone so far away and someone that has passed on for so long, especially when she's not that famous, unless you are a 'fan' like me?

Thank you,

That is very fascinating information thanks!
I am translating a Chinese theatre script based on the life of Der Ling in the Palace, and a particular Parisan street and park were mentioned in it... I believe Der Ling had made reference to them in the book Kowtow, but I haven't been able to get an English copy of this book.
So, I'm wondering if you are able to tell me what was the Street that the Yu family lived in when Yu Keng was serving as a Minister in France? And (it should be in the same chapter of the book) what was the park they used to go to to take a ride on the coaches?
Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Hong
