Thank you Jason for your reply. Your Karl Ystenes could certainly be the one I am looking for as he was buried on Christmas Island (near Australia) on 14.12.48 and listed as being 61 years of age.
My interest is a little obscure as I am hoping to find photographs of his funeral in case they show nearby graves. Let me know if you locate his family, and good luck with your family research. Regards Glenys

My name is also, coincidentally, Jason Ystenes. I moved to Ga in 98, when I was 8 yrs old. I am the Grandson of the late Joan M. Ystenes. I lived in La Crosse, Wisconsin until, well, 98. I'm the son of Daryl Ystenes. It's a small world, huh?

Hi Jason. It is nice to meet you!

I believe I have some information on your family, as part of the one name study I have been doing for Ystenes, but it does not go back very far.

Do you know what area of Norway your family is originally from? Mine was from Ålesund, on the west coast.

You can check out my Ystenes study at this address:

If you have any additional information or corrections, they would be most welcome!

Cheers,

Hey Jason,

My name is Brian Ystenes. I would like to say that I'm glad that I'm not the only one who takes an interest in our families past and also want to know how many Ystenes's are out there so please share what you find out. Thank You

Hello Jason
Just read your email and am letting you know that there is an Ystenes family in England (the only one). My father's family also lived in Alesund and to the best of my knowledge my great grandfather came from Trondheim. Will try and get some names from my relatives in Norway to see if they fit anywhere in your research.
You may already be aware that there is an Ystenes Strasse and Ystenes Gaten in Alesund named after the family.

Regards
Johan

Hello, Jason.

Like you, I live in Calgary, Alberta, and am descended from an Ystenes. My grandfather, Ole Lindseth, was born in Ålesund, Norway, to Knute Olsen Lindseth and Anna Marie Jorgine Andreasdotter Ystenes. Anna was the daughter of Andrew Olaf Edward Petersen Ystenes and Berthe Marie Severina Andreasdotter Ystenes of Ålesund. I don't know much about Anna's family, but there are many similarities in our family histories that lead me to believe we may be related. I hope you are still monitoring this thread - would be interesting to compare notes on this possible family connection!

Janice, it is such a pleasure to meet you!

I believe we have the same ancestor in Peter Jørgen Martinus Johnsen Ystenæs (born about 1813 in Borgund, near Ålesund).

I have undertaken a lot of research in the Norwegian digital archives (http://www.arkivverket.no/eng/Digital-Archives), and if I have things correct, Peter was Andrew's father. Peter is also my great great grandfather (great grandfather is Ole Johan Andreas Petersen Ystenæs, and grandfather is Rasmus Engvald Ludvig Petersen Ystenes, who immigrated to Alberta).

You can check out my full tree at Rootsweb (http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=jmness).

I would love to exchange more information with you, and hopefully meet up some day. Let's correspond directly.
