Yslas Family in Southern California
I am interested in my ancestry and was wondering if there was any extended family I could get in contact with for more information. I frequently see my last name, Yslas, spelled 'Islas' and the name with a 'Y' is rare. I met a woman in Long Beach, CA whose last name was Islas and she said that her grandfather's last name was Yslas but only because it was spelled incorrectly on his birth certificate when he came to the U.S. My Grandfather and his family came to the U.S. from Jalisco, MX circa 1925. I would appreciate any info anyone has. Thank you!

Re: Yslas Family in Southern California
My Grandfather Frank Yslas, I believe was born in Arizona, early 1900's, deceased around 1978, do not know where his family was from. Lived in Lancaster, CA into the 70's, and Eagle Rock, CA until Death. I do know his Siblings, my aunts and uncle, do not know too much else.

I can tell you this....I have been told that I am related to both! Maybe 3 generations ago, the name was changed from Islas to Yslas....not quite sure why. I hope that we can resolve the mystery soon....

Re: Yslas Family in Southern California
I have a clue as to why it is spelled with a Y. My grandfather told me that back in the day when our family came to the USA, we were horse theives. In order to avoid being recognized and captured, we changed our names from Islas to Yslas. Not sure id this is true but that is what i have heard!

Re: Yslas Family in Southern California
Okay the story about being horse thieves is true my great great grandfather Yslas came from Guadaljara, Jalisco, MX around 1904 so early 1900's and what I was told was that he was having an affair with a politically connected ranchero's soon to be bride and before the wedding he and his lover the bride to be stole the prized horse of the ranchero and fled north to the United States. When coming to the U.S. The name given by the new couple was Yslas.

Re: Yslas Family in Southern California
The name is sometimes spelled with a Y because back in the day you could make the Y fancier than an I when you signed your name. It is that simple.
