YOUNGSTOWN BERNARD JAMES YOZWIAK
Funeral services will be held on Monday, at 9:30 a.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, and at 10:00 at St. Christine Catholic Church, for Bernard James Yozwiak, 92, who entered into rest July 13, 2011.

Ben was born July 5, 1919 in Youngstown, Ohio (Mahoning County) the son of Walter and Anna (Baluch) Yozwiak.
He graduated from Chaney High School in 1936 and Marietta College in 1940, with an A.B. degree in mathematics.
His post graduate work was at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned both an M.S. and a Ph.D. degree in mathematics.
After graduation from Marietta, Ben married Helen Mika Yozwiak.

They enjoyed 66 years of marriage before her passing in August of 2010.

During 1942-1944, the young couple moved to Tomah, Wisconsin where Ben served for two years as a civilian instructor for the U.S. Army.

After the war, Ben began his teaching career in the Youngstown area, at Fowler High School where he served as principal and math and science teacher.
In 1947 his lifelong commitment to Youngstown State University began.
Over the next 45 years until his retirement in 1992, Ben rose from math instructor to chairman of the math department, and then in 1971 was named Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. During this period, Ben was involved in various university committees which were instrumental in contributing to the growth of Y.S.U., from the formulation of the University Senate to the founding of the Graduate School. He also directed Y.S.U.'s participation in the NEOUCOM consortium.
For his outstanding work and passion for Y.S.U. , in 1997 Ben was awarded the prestigious Heritage Award .
Previously, Ben was the inaugural recipient of the Watson Distinguished Professor Award, which recognized his superior teaching and inspirational scholarship within the classroom.
Outside of Y.S.U., Ben worked with several charitable organizations, most notably St. Elizabeth Hospital Advisory Committee, Youngstown Players Board, Catholic Charities League (Vice-President), the Chesterton Club (President), and the Mahoning Valley Red Cross Board. He also was a member of St. Christine Church for the past 56 years.

A terrific husband, father and grandfather, and good friend to many, Ben will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered , especially by his children; Ruth (Charles) Lewis of Pittsburgh & Sarasota, Fl., John (Patricia Douglas) of Lexington, Ky., Mark (Cynthia Jukich) of Cincinnati, and Bernard (Theresa Jankovic) of Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y. He also leaves nine grandchildren, two-great-grandchildren, a brother James (Irene), and a sister Florence (Albert) Scheinberg of Youngstown.

In addition to his wife and parents, Ben was preceded in death by his brothers; Leo, Henry, Chester, Edward, Alfred and Raymond Yozwiak.
Friends may call on Sunday, from 4-8 p.m. at the Vaschak-Kirila Funeral Home, 3100 Canfield Rd..
