History Of The Yowell Name?

From what I have heard a few times is that
the surname Yowell is orginally a Norway
surname. That at least some of the Yowells
in America first came from Norway to England,
and then to America. Does anyone out there
know any information on this subject?
THANKS!!!!!!

one of my distant ancestors was a Yowell and he came from Baden Germany. in the old country the name was spelled UHL. I guess they anglicized the name when they got over here. hope this helps.

I was reading in a book earlier today and
found another differant spelling of the
surname Yowell. It is Yolle. Was wondering
what country/nation might spell it this way.

The Surname "Yole": William Yole

You need to get a copy of Chapter 5 of "Welch
and Allied Families", published in 1932 by
Gustin Courson Weaver. On page 228 he states,
"The first of the family there is record of
was William Yole, a freeman of York, under the
reign of Edward III. In 1379 we find Isabella
and Johannus Yoll and Robertus and Willemus
Youle. The first Yowell that came to this
county was Jacob, a pedagog from Holland, and
settled in New Amersterdam previous to about
1660. He had 13 sons."

There are atleast four other collected
geneological works which mention the "Yole"
and/or "Youle" spelling in connection with
the "Yowell" spelling. In all cases, however,
the time frame is between 1265 and 1566.

I have never heard of this surname before your
post. Please, if you can, provide me with some
source for this information. According to my
records, there are a number of French spellings
for the primary surname, but none, as yet, with
the spelling you provided. Please E-mail me
with any information you might have or remember
from upbringing. Sincerely, Joe

We have some oral history of the Yowells being Dutch and arriving here from somewhere, Amsterdam, I think. J Mishoe
