I am looking for birth death dates of
Jacob Judith Yowell. Also their marrige
date if possible. One of their sons, Simeon
Yowell, is my ggg grandfather. Simeon was born in Madison Co., Va. on 12-16-1804.
From what I can understand, when my
members of the Yowells first came to America,
they settled in the Kent Island, Maryland
area.

Adeline Yowell of Greene Co. m. Cole of Greene County.

I'm at a brick wall on the Yowell family, I'm trying to find the parents of Adeline Yowell who married William Cole Feb. 1,1842. Adeline was born about July 4, 1821 and died Dec.13,1891. I have a lot of information on the Cole side but very little on the Yowell side. Would love to share information. My email is Harrisklrhl@yahoo.com. Thanks Keith

I'm sorry that it has taken me so long to
get back to you with a reply. It has been a
really busy holliday season. I have checked
all my family notes, plus my Grandmother's
notes and can not find any Adeline Yowell
or anyone in my family that has married into
a Cole Family. My Yowell goes back to Kent
Island, Maryland to about the mid to late
1600's. Most of my Yowell Family has been
in Virginia since at least the early to mid
1800's. Mostly in the Culpeper and Clarke
Counties areas. Best wishes on your search
and I hope you have a Happy New Year.

Brickwall on Adeline Yowell

Elizabeth thank you for your message. I seem to be at a brickwall on the Yowell side of the family. I did find in a book about marriages of Greene Co. listing Adeline and Williams marriage -- it listed John Yowell as the "bondsman". Do you know what that means? Happy New Year! Keith

"Bondsman"

Dear Mr. Harris,
Sorry that it has taken me so long to
reply. From what I understand, bondsman is
a person who takes responsibility for another by furnishing a bond: surety. And
surety: in (law) one who makes himself
liable for another's debts, etc.
Could it be that the John Yowell that you
are talking about signed a note/loan to
help Williams pay off some debts??
Best wishes on your search.

Elizabeth, That's what I thought it meant too. But when I saw it listed on her marriage records, I thought maybe the meaning has changed over the years. Thanks for your help, on with the search. Bye, Keith

Elizabeth- if your Yowells are from the Culpeper.Madison/Greene/Orange Co areas of VA- I wouldn't search for them in Kent County ,MD- the Yowells of this area are part of the Germanna Settlers group. These Yowells came to America from Germany abt 1725.

Keith- a Bondsman on a marriage listing is the person who would be liable for the "Bond" - if for some reason the marriage did not take place- a bond had to be paid. Some times it was $50- I even seen it as high as $500. The only time money changed hands was if the couple didn't get married. That is were it differs from the present day "Bondsman".
