DNA Testing to find out Yowell family origins English or German??
there is a Debate that has been going on for over 20 years now! as to the weather there were 2 Christopher Yowell's
one English and one German??
well we do know there was a German Christoper Yowell original name was Christoph UHL
but there is no paper trail to indicate there ever was an English one!! yet alot of people wanna say there was!
my 5th great grandfather was William Yowell who married lucy shipp. his father was john Yowell who married Sarah hurt. and his dad was john yowell who married mary surname unknown.
if you are descended from any of the people i have listed above then we are related!
this is where the trouble starts some people say he was the son of Christopher Yowell who was the son of Richard Yowell son of English settler Thomas Yowell. this is listed here on ancestry.com. as a matter of fact most of the family trees on here list this..
but there is no hard paper trail proof that there was an English Christoper!!!! so now it seems to be we are all Germans!!! and that john Yowell who married mary. was born in Virginia to the German settler Christoph UHL/Yowell and one of his wives.
however i have yet to uncover any hard evidence that my john Yowell that married mary unknown was a son of the German Christoph!
however he may very well be!!
we need Yowell's who have the ancestors i have listed above to take DNA tests to find out if the Y male chromosome DNA haplogroup. can be traced to see if it is more common among English people or Germans! i would test myself if i had the money but just in case no one has Tested yet get out there and do it!!! if you can!! to any Yowell's that may have already Tested for it, what was your results? English or German??
hopefully in time i will get some feedback on this issue. for i feel it is the only way to truly confirm or Debunk our family's German origins
thanks COUSINS!

Re: DNA Testing to find out Yowell family origins English or German??
I have a Yowell book that was written by Ann Yowell Cook. It talks about the history of the Yowell's. In my initial skimming through, it confirms that Christopher Uhl was German. However, there are several other Christopher Yowell's in the index. I haven't gone into further detail on that yet, but I can look up the one's that she mentions in the book and see if any of them are of English descent. I just got this book in early September and haven't had much time to sit and look through it yet.
I am a descendant of Cassius Cornell "Cash" Yowell. My Grandfather was his son Cassius Cornell Jr. who later changed his name to Kenneth Yowell. I recently got the Yowell book from my aunt who had been researching the Yowell history for many years herself. I have been researching it with her, but hadn't gone too indepth into it until recently when my aunt passed away. I have inherited all of the Yowell history research that she had, but don't have it in my possession yet (except the Yowell book) as the affairs of her estate are still being worked out.
But having said that I will look in the Yowell book and see what it says about the Christophers that are listed in there other than Christopher Uhl, who we know is of German heritage.

Re: DNA Testing to find out Yowell family origins English or German??
I have that the John Yowell that you mention was indeed the son of Christopher Uhl, also known as Christoph Uhl who at the time was married to Eva Gottsaurin. Their son "John" was actually born Jerg Friedrich in Sulzfeld, Germany. He came to Virginia with his family in 1717 and it was believed that his name was anglicized to John after they came to Virginia. John Yowell Jr. Son of John and Mary was born in Virginia. He is the John that married Sarah Hurt.
The name went from Christoph Uhl to Christopher Owell, to Christopher Yowell and it appears it was all the same person. I'll look into it further, but that is what I have found in my study of this so far.

Re: DNA Testing to find out Yowell family origins English or German??
Zach: By the way, I think we are related. I am descended from James H. Yowell, who by my further study appears to have been a brother of your William Yowell. John and Mary Yowell appear to be the parents of both your William Yowell and my James H. Yowell. Feel free to contact me if you want any further info. I have a lot of info that my Aunt has already given me in her study, but will soon receive everything she had regarding the family history. She may have had documents that prove some of the things that you are curious about, but I won't know until I get the info in my hands.
In my line it goes: My Grandfather Kenneth Yowell who married Annette Barnett, his father was Cassius Cornell Yowell Sr. and mother was Thelma Carolyn Fulton, Cassius's parents were William Sherman Yowell and Lilly Mae Watkins, William's parents were James Hurt Yowell and Edith Ann Husband. James Hurt Yowell's parents were John W. Yowell and Sophia Butler, John Yowell's parents were James H. Yowell and Mary J. Walker and James H's parents were John and Mary.
