Hello, I just recently discovered that what I thought was a Susan Mordy on a marriage certificate I just received may have been Susan YORDY. Susan and her husband Adam Brenner were parents to my gg-grandmother Mary Elizabeth Brenner. Mary Elizabeth married my gg-grandfather Benjamin Hackman Goss. They were both originally from Pa but were married in Carroll County, Illinois in 1879. Do you recognize this family? What is the background of the name Yordy? Where is it from and what is it's meaning? Thanks, Kay

I can't answer all of your questions but, hopefully someone else can.

No, I don't know the family you mention, try the board for the husbands name.

Yordy, Yorty, Jorde, Jordy when searching for information for this family try any and all variations, the same document could have the name spelled 2 different ways.

First one I have is Peter b. in Switzerland d. in Pa.

Hope this helps.

I saw your query on internet recently about Susan Yordy or Mordy on marriage certificate. My aunt had done some genealogical investigation a number of years ago and had made note of Susanna Yordy Brenner, wife of Adam Brenner, and mother of Jacob Brenner, who would have been my great grandfather. There was a picture of her with note she was "Amish from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Was ex-communicated from her family when she married out of the faith. She had 13 children. 1808-1890.
In a book, Pioneers of the Bluestem Prairie on history of Riley County on page 287, Mrs. Paul Brenner had made entry with reference to Jacob Brenner. He was born in Columbia, Lancaster Co PA 26 Sep 1839 and died 26 Aug 1919.
In the description Jacob Brenner was noted to be a son of Adam and Suzanne (Yordy) Brenner and a grandson of Gerhardt and Catherine(Schneider) Brenner.
Jacob Brenner's parents moved from Columbia, Lancaster Co PA in 1841, to Freeport IL in 1852. That trip was made over the Pennsylvania RR across the mountains to Blairstown, than by canal boat to Pittsburgh, then by steamboat to Savanah IL and the last 35 miles by wagon. Jacob attended a district school at Freeport for two years.
There is information on Jacob Brenner's service in Civil war which is available on internet about when and where he enlisted in 97th Illinois infantry. I think he enlisted in Freeport but I think caroll, IL was listed as address but I am not certain about exact address.
I don't know much more about the Yordy's except they were Amish and apparently near Lancaster county PA.

Further information on Susannah (Yordy) Brenner, borne Dec. 23, 1808 and died Sept. 23, 1890. She had apparently lived in Shannon, IL with husband Adam Brenner. He had died there. She died in Beloit, Iowa where she had lived with a daughter.

I probably would be interested in sharing information. I had soem information but primarily from Ancestry web sites. I would need to review it in more detail. I believe she is buried in Iowa, but was born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Illinois, married Adam Brenner, who was from Lancaster Co, Pennsylvania, and they had a number of children, I think 13 in all. My Great grandfather, Jacob Brenner was one of their children, was a civil war veteran injured at Champion Hill in the Vicksburg Campaign while another son, Benjamin was killed or was a war casualty at Vicksburg.
I have seen some lineages I think leading back to Peter Yordy, who was from Switzerland I believe. The family tradition is she was from an Amish Mennonite family.
Thanks
