I am the daughter of Richard Jopp. I think he is the cousin of your husband Fred. He is the son of Angus and Julius Jopp.

My father was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War and they pronounced Yopp as Jopp. Apparently, that is the German pronunciation, so that is perhaps why some have kept the Jopp name.

From my understanding the name is of German origin...spelled Jopp. I married into the Yopp name. My father in law is Lamar Yopp (born around 1922 or 1924). His father (my father in laws father) was James Yopp and his (my father in law) mother was Charity. I believe I remember being told of family from Georgia as well. I will ask my husband again tonight or give my father in law a call. I know my father in law has family in New Jersey.

Anything you find out about the name pls let me know. yoppdoc@gmail.com

Warmly,

Cecelia

My Great Grandmother was Harriet Luthenia Yopp. She died five years before I was born, but Mom said her last name was Cheerokee and that her Great Grandmother was a full blooded Cherrokee Indian. The family tree that I can find for her stops at her Grandfather Samuel E. Yopp and his wife, Sarah D. Underwood's parents. I know from Great Grandmother down is correct. I am not sure about before then. My Great Grandmother was from Roanoke, Virginia. If anyone finds out differently, please let me know at ammoye@valdosta.edu.

Can't tell you the origin, but there were plenty of Yopps in England going back at least as far as the sixteenth century. The name had a number of variants: Yop, Yopp, Yoppe, Yapp and Yappe. It settled eventually on 'Yapp' in England. Most of the ones we have found are in Shropshire, England, or close by. Have a look at the Clunbury Parish records for some examples:
