Hi my name is Yvonne Yohey and my family has done alot of searching of our ancestors and at one point in time Yohey was spelled with "J" in our book that our family has put together. My grandmother was full blooded Italian and came from Italy. My grandfather Cleo Yohey, I was told that he was French and that is were Yohey came from the French. But I seem to remember there being more about the origin of the name Yohey. Iam always looking for new family and learning more about our fascinating last name.

Yes it is an interesting name! My mother was a Yohey from Akron, Ohio. According to her the family name was Yohe but during WWI her father and his brothers added the last y to the name. In the cemetery it bears out that his grandfather had no y on the name but the father also added the y before he died. Interesting?

Very interesting about the name. My father has a book about our family history that goes way back with the spelling of yohey in many different ways. I saw once spelled with a J. My family is Nevada I need my father to send me the book so I can look it over again it has been years. I think that is so cool to chat with others with the same name everyone I know with the name Yohey is my family. We have family (Yohey) in Austrailia too. When I get the book I will look at all the spellings and post them. Take care, Yvonne Yohey Shores

A few descendants of Michael Yohe (1746-1832) changed the spelling to Yohey. Michael was born Johann Michael Joh in Gammelsbach, Germany; immigrated in 1754 with his mother and stepfather, Michael Lehn; that family settled in Easton, PA (near Philadelphia), but Michael and his family went to Washington County, PA (near Pittsburgh) in the mid-1790's. It is likely there are other sources of the Yohey name; there were other Joh/Yohe immigrants, and the Yohey name shows up in parts of Pennsylvania that would suggest descent from one or another or these Yohes.
