Michael Yohe was born March 31, 1747 in Baden Baden W. Germany. Around the year 1755 he immigrated to the Colonies of America with his parents when he was 8 years old. Settled in Easton Pennsylvania. He married Anna Maria Shouse who was born April 1752 in Easton Pennsylvania. They had 11 children: Peter 1774, Mary Oct 12, 1776, Catherine 1778, Elizabeth Aug 31, 1780, Michael July 25, 1782, Jacob 1784, Sarah 1786, Abraham 1788, Isaac Apr/May 23,1790, Susannah 1794 and Margaret 1794.

Michael served as a (private) soldier in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington. Enlisted Forkstownship Co., 5th Battalion, Northhampton Co. Militia. He spent a winter at Valley Forge; was in the Battle of Germantown and served until the close of the war. He also served under Gen. Washington during the Whiskey Insurrection in 1794 and camped in Washington Co. Penn. On the site where Mt. Zion Lutheran Church now stands. Adam Yohe is also listed in the service and was given a grant of land at Easton, Pa.

Michael settled in Washington Co. Penn. After the war on a farm at Ginger Hill where he Died Dec 14,1823 at the age of 86. His wife “Mary” Anna Marie died April 17, 1823.

One of Michael’s children had a son whom was named Michael. He was born in 1815 in Penn. And Married Mary A. who was also born in Penn. In 1813. They had 11 children; Stephen was born in 1831 in Penn. Then the family moved to Ohio and must have lived with some relatives since they don’t show up on any of the census from 1830 until 1850.b While in Ohio 7 children were born: Elizabeth 1832, Caroline 1834, Ephraim 1836, Alexander 1838, Twins> Michael and Mary A. 1840, and James 1844. By 1846 the family had moved to Tipton County, Madison township, Indiana where three more children were born; Savina 1846, Marion Washington 1849, and John 1853. The Census of 1850 lists the family members, ages and where they were born. Also listed with them is Elizabeth Yohe age 64. That is very close to the age of the German Michael’s daughter. So this could have been young Michael’s aunt who had moved with them.

Michael’s son Marion Washington Yohe married Martha Jane Riley from Homer Indiana, who is supposed to be related to James Whitcomb Riley. The had Four children: James Lenard June 26,1872, William (Albert) , Francis M. 1879, and Julia Hurst. Marion (Bud) owned quite a lot of farm land and had horses. He died while exercising a promising horse on the Fairgrounds Track. He fell over after he pulled a buggy shaft out of the way of the horse who was driven by Eck Seward.

James Lenard married Connie Cora Cochrel in 1894. They had seven children: Chester 1895, Azel 1897, Lester Loral 1899, |Ester 1899, Martha 1902, Marion 1909, Dorotha 1911. He inherited 40 acres at Newby’s Crossing N.E. corner of the crossroad and farmed for many years. In 1913 he moved his family to Starbuck, Manitoba, Canada but bad crops and hard luck forced them to return. Chester and Azel’s wife died from a flue epidemic while they were there. The winters must have been difficult and many memories are told of going miles to school on a sled drawn by a horse; of going to help other families who were poor or sick, of getting lost in snow storms. But in 1919 the difficulties were too much to over comb and James brought the younger portion of his family back to Elwood, Indiana. They had little more than the clothes on their back. Connie eventually got a job working at Leeson’s department store in Elwood.

Marion (RIP) married Margaret Dauenhauer in 1932. My Grandmother and Grandfather to be continued.

I don't believe this Michael Yohe was descended from the Michael Yohe b 1746 in Germany who immigrated in 1754, married Anna Maria (Mary) Shouse, served in the Revolutionary War, moved to Washington County PA around 1794, and died there in 1832. I've done a fair amount of research on this Michael's family (he is my g3gf)

Michael's sons Jacob and Isaac each had a son named Michael. Jacob's son was b 15 Jun 1809; Isaac's was b 2 Oct 1815 -- both in Washington Co. PA. These are the only two Michael Yohes that appear in the baptismal records of the Mt. Zion church; there is no Stephen Yohe listed there.

I don't have much information on Jacob's son Michael, but his birthdate doesn't match your Michael b 1815.

Isaac's son Michael married Phoebe McConnell and lived in Washington Co. PA all their lives, I believe.

I found a couple of trees in Ancestry.com -- http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/12714541/person/-197994751?ss...= for one -- giving a Michael b 1813 with children whose names roughly match the names you mentioned, and ancestry Michael -> George (1777-1851)-> Michael (1748-1785) -> ?. Not all children's names match, and other facts don't match your narrative, so I'm not sure what is correct.

Another tree -- http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/16533634/person/498770247 -- traces this line back to Adam Yohe b 1722 in Germany. I believe Adam immigrated to the Easton PA area in 1749 and may have been a cousin of Georg Conrad Joh, the father of Michael (1746-1832).

I am in the process of starting a Yohe Surname Y-DNA project on worldfamilies.org. Y-DNA is passed from father to son with rare minor mutations, and is a reasonably reliable way of determining whether two males might have a common male ancestor. Re: Michael Yohe legacy from 1747 to 1932: the Indiana Michael?

There were two Michael Yohes who were Revolutionary War patriots -- the Michael (1746-1832) who lived in Easton and eventually moved to Washington County, and a Michael (1748-1785) who lived in York County; said to have been born in Bavaria.

The second Michael had a son Michael (1770-1832), who married Catharina Raffensperger; they lived in Adams County, PA and had 10 children. One of these was Michael, Jr. born between 1801 and 1810. He shows up in Adams County, PA in the 1830 census as Michael Yoe Jr., married, no children; but I don't find him there after that. I have found no marriage record for "Junior."

Would it be possible that "Junior" is the Indiana Michael? As I recall, the Indiana census documents give a birthdate of about 1807. But the Elizabeth listed on the 1850 Indiana census is a bit of a monkey-wrench in the works.

"Junior" did have an Aunt Elizabeth, but all I know about her is that she existed. It is possible, but not likely, that she was born as late as 1786; Michael's father died in April of 1785. His mother (also Elizabeth) subsequently married Peter Zollinger (and, later, Joseph Heiner). Peter Zollinger's will mentions his step-daughter Elizabeth Yoe. It stretches the limits of credibility to suggest that this is the Indiana Elizabeth, though.

Although Michael (1748) was said to have been born in Bavaria, my searching has turned up no immigration record for him. Could he be the son of John George, who was born in Germany in about 1714, immigrated in 1737, and lived in Reading, PA? Some sources say this is the case. John George did have a son Michael, probably born before 1750, who doesn't appear to have stayed in the immediate Berks County area.

Y-DNA from John George's line does not match that from the line of the Washington County Michael; but if these postulated connections are correct, Y-DNA from the Indiana Michael's line should be a fairly close match to that of other males from the John George line.

I have references for the cited documents if anyone is interested.
