Origin of the Name Yoerger
My mother's maiden name is Yoerger, and as far as I know, the name "originated" on Ellis Island! It was Jaeger and an official misspelled it. Jaeger is "hunter" in German. Our family is from the border between Germany and France, Alsace-Lorraine.

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
I'm interested in your possible connection to my Yoergers. My maiden name was Yoerger and I have traced my family back to an Ignatious(Spelling?) and Sophia who settled in Thornville, Ohio. There son George married Dorothy Familton who gave birth to my grandfather Percival F. Yoerger. He founded the Yoerger Sign Co. in Columbus - the first neon sign maker West of the Alleghenies for years. Any connections here??? I think Ignatius may have had a second family after Sophia died - with a son Peter.

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
My branch of the Yoerger family is something of a mystery, actually! They were from Alsace-Lorraine, which is sometimes a part of Germany, as it was when they left, and sometimes a part of France. My mother once saw a family tombstone with the last name spelled Jaeger. The "Yoerger" spelling may have originated on an immigrant ship's manifest or at Ellis Island. I don't have a town of origin in Alsace-Lorraine for my Yoergers. Frederick or "Fritz" Yoerger was my great-grandfather and the first one in this country, sometime in the mid-1800's. I wish I had more that I could tell you but if we are from the same family, perhaps you know more than me!

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
My grandfather was Edward Anthony Yoerger. He was born in the late 1800's and died at about the age of 40. I do not know the names of his parents. He lived mostly in Mass.
I too have heard that the spelling was jaeger.

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
If it makes you feel any better, I've been researching ancestors in St. Louis, MO (mid-1860s to 1920s) who were sometimes Yoerger, sometimes Yaeger, sometimes Jaeger, sometimes even Yorger. Wilhelm Yaeger b. abt. 1831 in Baden, which neighbors Alsace-Lorraine, married Louisa Runge 03 Mar 1863 in St. Louis, and d. 11 Sep 1866. The spelling of the name was inconsistent, but I'm guessing it had something to do with the German dialect that these German-Americans spoke. If anybody out there can help pinpoint Wilhelm Jaeger (Yoerger's) birthplace, I'd be very grateful. Vince

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
My Yoerger was also from Alsace Lorraine, France. I have a letter written in 1905 from Alois Yoerger. Any connection? I believe the spelling was Joerger and then changed to Yoerger. The family settled in Altus, Arkansas and then Hood River, Oregon. Any connection with your relatives?

Re: Origin of the Name Yoerger
Bruce, I am married to your cousin, Wilbur Zobbe. He is the son of Clara Heinlein Zobbe Wolf. I believe that you are the grandson of Robert Yorger, her 1st cousin. Her mother, Anna Yorger Heinlein, was sister to your gr-grandfather, Fred Yorger. I have done a bit of work on the name Yorger but haven't done much for a long time. It's been a year and a half since you posted your query; are you still interested? Sue Zobbe
