Richard, I read your message of april 2000. A little late in reply but, I am hoping you might be able to give me some leads. My ggrandfather was Jesse Yocham. He was born in Marion County (Lead Hill area) Arkansas about 1865. His first wife was named Annie Willoghby and they had one child named George Yocham who was born in Lead Hill AR. Jesse was living in what is now Haskell Co. Ok by the middle 1890's and married my ggrandmother, Mary Etta Blaylock in Fort Smith AR in 1900. The marriage license indicates they were living in Indian Territory at that time. Their children were my grandfather Edgar Earl Yocham and Roy Hubert Yocham. Family lore says my family came from Tennessee, moved to Arkansas and then to Oklahoma. My greatgrandfather had relatives in Texas, a brother I think, and my grandfather says he had a grandmother who was a Coker. However, I have never been able to get enough information to get past Jesse Yocham. Any hints, leads, info,. etc. would be appreciated

Jack/Richard/anyone:

The Fort Smith online marriage index (reached via http://www.fspl.lib.ar.us/) shows the following for Jesse Yocham and Etta Blaylock:

1901 Fort Smith Bk G 49501 BLAYLOCK, ETTA, age 18, YOCHUM, JESSE S., age 35, date 19011005, A. A. MCDONALD (officiant).

That makes the marriage date 10/5/1901 - is that index wrong - should it really be 1900?

Do you know where Jesse and Etta were in the 1910 census? I'm trying to find a record that shows Edgar Earl with Jesse/Etta and according to his obit Edgar should be shown as 2-3 in 1910.

And looking for Jesse in 1880 at familysearch.org the only candidate I could find born abt 1865 is in this family:

Precinct 2, Hill Co, TX
FHL Film 1255311 NA Film No T9-1311, Page 347A

Any connection?

Sue, Thank you so much for posting the information. Jesse and Etta were married in 1901. The index is correct. I have the original marriage license. Confusion about dates may be because of differences in Etta's birth date. Some records show her as born in 1881 but, she was actually born 12/25/1882.

I have not located Jesse and Etta in the 1910 cenus records. However, my greatgrandmother, Etta, and my grandfather told me they lived in Blaine Bottom, Haskell County, Oklahoma. I never independedently verified that. Just accepted it from her.

Jesse Yocham is buried in the Short Mountain Cemetary, Cowlington, Le Flore County, Oklahoma and died (according to family history on July 4, 1921) Headstone just says 1921.

Etta (Mary Etta) Blaylock's father and mother are also buried in that cemetary. J.C. Blaylock 1827 - 1/1/1887 and
Moley Blaylock (Mary Moley Brown) 1862 - 6/20/1909

Etta Yocham is buried in Auburn, California

I will start to research the info on Jesse in Texas. I know he had family in Texas, but info on his family has been very scarce. You have given me a good place to start. If you are checking further on Yocham genealogy, Jesse was married prior to his marriage to Etta to an Annie Willoughby. According to my grandfather, Edgar, he had a grandmother with the last name "Coker" but he didn't know anything about her.

Jack, Thank you for replying. Ref the 1910 census, you said:

<... my greatgrandmother, Etta, and my grandfather told me they lived in Blaine Bottom, Haskell County, Oklahoma.>

Certainly they knew what they were talking about. Blaine Bottom is in ED93 in 1910 Haskell Co. (The township maps at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/okprojects/haskell/haskell... were tremendously helpful. It would have been really hard without them as I am not at all familiar with the area). Sheet 5A, household 92 has, as far as I can make out (I am splitting the lines, there's really no easy way to do these long lines here):

Yocham Jesse, Head, m, w, 44, M2, 10, -, -, AR, AR, GA, -, -,
Etta, Wife, f, w, 27, M1, 10, 3, 1, AR, US, AL, -, -,
George R?, Son, m, w, 24, S, -, -, -, AR, AR, TN, -, -,
Edgar Earl, Son, m, w, 12, S, -, -, -, OK, AR, AR, -, - ,

English, Day Laborer, Odd jobs, w, no?, 0, yes, yes, -,
English, None, -, -, -, -, yes, yes, -,
English, Farmer, General? farm, oa, -, -, yes, yes, -,
-, None, -, -, -, -, -, -, -,

-, -, H, 2, 1, 0, 0
-, -, -, -, -, -, -
-, -, -, -, -, -, -
-, -, -, -, -, -, -

My comments: Edgar Earl - age in the census definitely LOOKS like 12 but he should be 2. Since he is not shown with 'English' in the language column I guess it could be a census-taker mistake. Jesse - shown as veteran of the Union or Confed Army/Navy but surely is too young. George - shown as farming on own account (I think) but the household is stated as House not Farm. Anyway - there's something to work with here.

<Jesse Yocham, J.C. Blaylock, Moley Blaylock .. Short Mountain Cemetary, Cowlington, Le Flore County, Oklahoma>

Thank you. I found them listed at http://www.rootsweb.com/~okgenweb/cemetery/cem-online/shortm.... That is a couple of hundred miles from here but next time we travel to AR I'll see if we can stop by for photos. I am also looking for some of my Johnson line in that area, hence was interested in checking 1910 for the Yochams too. The particular Johnsons (John T and Mary Dollar Johnson) left Pope Co sometime after 1900 and resurfaced in Fort Smith in 1918. Family story recounts they went somewhere in that general area of OK, and some of their children later moved thereabouts (I think, but have nothing firm, Poteau and area). We also have the surname Dollar in our line and again they moved from western AR to various locations in OK around the same time.

<Etta Yocham is buried in Auburn, California>

When did she move and her family move west to CA? Did they travel with another family? (I am always looking for connections, hope you don't mind my asking).

Good luck in searching through Texas. Hill Co TX is not too far from here (I am in Collin Co), let me know if there is anything I can do. Just to also let you know we have Tysons in our line who moved to Milam Co, TX in the 1860-ish timeframe (Milam Co is some way south of Hill Co), also we have O'Daniels, Camps and Baucums moving around AR, OK and north Texas in the 1880s - 1940s, so let me know if those surnames ever ring bells.

Also one more question I forgot to ask in my previous post. I found the following in AR marriages 1851-1900: Floyd BLALOCK married Hattie YOCHAM, 30 Oct 1898, Marion Co, AR. Do they connect somehow?

Sue, Thank you so much. You have been a wealth of information. My search at times has been very frustrating and irt is nice to finally see some information turning up. With all the information you have been able to acquire, I think I need to polish up on my research skills.

RE: census records. You have hit the family right on. However, some of the information does not agree with what I was told as I was growing up. I will reply further after I have had an opportunity to find out what each of the census questions were. But here is what I know right off. The whole family were farmers. At times on their own at other times working with one of Etta's Brother's, John Blaylock if I remember correctly. There is no family history that Jesse was ever involved in the civil war. In fact he was born too late. However, there is family lore that he worked as a deputy US marshall in the Oklahoma Territory at one time. George Richard was Jesse's son from his first marriage to Annie Willoughby. I know nothing about her. I wonder if there are other census errors as Etta always told me her father was from Georgia and her mother from Tennessee.

RE: Cemetary photos. If at some time you have an opportunity to take photos, I will appreciate it greatly. I don't know when I will ever have an opportunity to get back there.

RE: Etta buried in Auburn, CA. The whole bunch of my branch of the Yochams moved to California in the late 1920's. I think just ahead of the depression and the dust bowl migration. They moved with people from the Maxwell and Dolan families, who were intermarried with Etta's sisters and with one of Etta's brother's, I think. Anyway, there is an "Uncle" John Blaylock buried in Ventura, CA who was related to my family. They eventually all settled in Ojai, CA and were living there when I was born in 1946. Etta moved to Newcastle, CA (a small town adjacent to Auburn, CA) in the middle 1960's with her son Roy Hubert Yocham and his Wife Hazel (nee Ford). A few years later, my grandparents, Edgar and Floy moved to Fallon, NV. My father, Jesse (J.C.) and his wife May moved to Reno, NV and then to Fallon, NV when J.C. retired. I haven't included exact dates but I probably can if you want them.

Unfortunately, none of the other families you mentioned ring a bell. I do not think Floyd Blalock and Hattie Yocham are in my family line as neither of the names is familiar.

Jack,

Ref Jesse Yocham/Etta Blaylock:

Here is the Blaylock info that I found in the 1900 census. I did not find any Yochams (or variants) in this ED nor in Choctaw Twp in Oklahoma Territory. From the entries below it seems that the Blaylocks had been in IT for a short time but there is another Blaylock family some pages away with older children who had been born there.

The first hhold shown includes 'Ettie' and shows father born GA and mother TN, more as you expected. The next household, John Blaylock, looks like a very strong possibility for Etta's brother John.

There were no Willoughby families in this ED75 (that I could see, some of the images are very difficult), let me know if you want me to post any of those if you get any clues to Ann Willoughby. There were a few Willoughby households in Oklahoma Territory, Choctaw Township, but no Yochams that I could make out. These particular census images were the only ones I had easy access to this week, as I mentioned I could have missed something relevant - some of them get very dark at the bottom.

I was just informed today that one of our Camp connections was in Antlers, OK, during this period. Antlers was also in Choctaw Nation, IT, it is SW of Blaine, about 150 miles from Cowlington and about 45 miles north of Paris, TX. I don't know much of this story yet.

Hope this is useful somehow, sometime, someplace. All mistakes are the fault of the transcriber :)

According to our records Hattie J. Yocham was the youngest child of John and Dinah Yocham and Hattie J. Yocham Married Floyd Jackson Blaylock in Marion Co. Arkansas. After they had 5 children they moved to Oklahoma, where the youngest child was born. I would like to find out what Dinah's maiden name was.
