Rejean, Regarding my bear encounter:
I was in Shenandoah National Park, exploring a section called the Limberlost, which has ancient hemlocks and 5 waterfalls. It was a beautiful day, one of the best, and my head was mostly in the sky when I came within 8 feet of 2 small black cubs. Only seconds later, never mind having time enough to adore, or even register the cubs were there, I noticed Mama Bear. Only she looked like she had noticed me well before I ever noticed her. She was so calm, but so wary. She watched her cubs, when she didn't watch me.
I FROZE. The deciding factor, or factors, were the cubs. They frolicked, unmolested and unafraid, and soon took off for parts unknown. Mama bear gave me one last look, then followed her cubs. That look told me lots. She didn't have to leave me alone, but she did. She coulda torn me apart, but didn't.
I moved, and breathed, shortly after, but mostly I wanted to get the hell out of the limberlost. I smelled fear ALL over me.
Don't know how to tell you this, but I smeared the forest's rich black earth all over me, to block out my scent. Where in heaven's name did such an idea ever come from, I'll never be able to tell. Maybe it was George.

That was a perfect response! Humans are exceptionally smelly to animals. (HA) I also have had some friendly but frightening encounters. Email me and we can share family legends and personal stories (I don't want to flood people's emails with our personal (though fascinating) conversations!:)

Hi Gary! I know there were several families that allied together on that trip to Ray County Missouri.According to a History I have of Ray Co MO the Grimes, Yoakum, McGlothin, Thomas, Adams, Van Bebber, and Kincaid families came by ox wagon through the Cumberland Gap, to St Louis, and on Ray County. There were 38 of them who spent that first winter "at the old Alfred Kincaid place, now the Clay Hamilton place". This is in reference to the settled of Knoxville, Ray Co., MO first settled as Buncombe, in 1837, laid out by John Grimes.

I am hoping you, or others, may have more info on some of the families. I believe the Adams mentioned to be an ancestor of mine, James Adams, who settled in Ray Co & appears on the 1840 census there. I have never been able to confirm his whereabouts prior to the 1840 census, and hope to be able to connect him to the travels of these families. Hope someone can help!! I would love any info about these families that may connect the dots. THANKS!!
