Yoakums at Zimm's Hot Springs, Idaho
Was Viola May Yoakum married to a Howton? My great great grandfather was Daniel Jackson Yoakum, who bought Yoakum Hot Springs (now Zimm's Hot Springs) with his brother Henry Clay Yoakum. Clay and his wife Hermie both died during the same year leaving the seven kids to be raised by Daniel and his father (my ggggrandfather) Hughy, and also some were sent to relatives in California. Viola Yoakum Howton would have been born at the Hot Springs, I think. I just thought it was too strong a coincidence (Yoakums at Zimm's Hot Springs) for us to not have a connection. Viola's sister Clara Yoakum Claghorn is still living at 104 and living in Idaho. I am trying to figure out if this is the Viola who made me a doll when I was a child. There was a Viola from California that I remember, but never knew her relation or last name. I'm sure we have some connection, and I have traced the Yoakums back several generations to Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. My great grandmother was Jennie Lee Yoakum Irwin Combs, and she left me a lot of information to go on. This allowed me to get back to Tennessee and Virginia to before the Revolutionary War. I'm going to visit my family next week in Oregon and might try to get my grandfather to take me to the Hot Springs, as I have read a lot about the family there. Hope to hear from you.

Tried emailing you and it didn't work
Kathi, I saw your other message about your maiden name being Howton, and I'm sure you're the granddaughter of the Viola I know of. Please get in touch with me. Your email address didn't work for me. jischeu@fastrans.net

Viola's father helped set up, or co-owned the Zimm's Hot Springs. There's a picture (the original) at the hot springs with my grandma in it. She was 10 or 11 at the time. yes, grandma was married to George William Howton. They had 4 kids: Garth, Robert, Gordon and Viola Jean.

Re: Yoakums at Zimm's Hot Springs, Idaho
Just for clarification, my fathers mother, Viola Yoakum Howton's middle name is Maybelle, as verified by entry in the baby book of Susan Janette Howton, my sister. Also, Viola had 6 children, not 4. The first two children, Roberta and Kenneth, died reportedly of measles at 2 years and <1 year. My father Robert Wayne, went, I believe thru third grade in New Meadows. It was told to me by my dad that his grandmother Hermie (Foss) Yoakum was directly related to Joseph Jacob Foss, a WWII fighter ace who went on to become governor of South Dakota for two terms. The state building in Sioux Falls is named after him. Also, Hughy Graham Yoakum, Henry Clay and Daniel Jacksons father, was the first judge in umatilla county, Oregon. The family (Yoakum and Branstetter) are almost all buried in Nolin, Or. between Umatilla and Pendleton on the Umatilla River. From what I can find, Daniel Branstetter (brother) of Hughy's wife Nancy Branstetter, and Hughy originally came to Oregon over the Oregon Trail 1835-1839.
