Pioneer, Businessman, Gentleman

Passed away peacefully at the Prince George Regional Hospital.

Growing up in the Wing Sang building located in Vancouver, Chinatown during the depression era and working long hours at the fish cannery as a teenager shaped Roy's work ethic and sparked an ambition to succeed in life.

Roy's first encounter as a businessman was as a young adult when transporting (peddling) produce up the Cariboo Highway to Barkerville to sell, but the local merchants did not buy their produce so they decided to open a small store in Wells, BC. A short while later Roy went to the University of Washington and graduated in 1944 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, achieving his goal of becoming an engineer. Unfortunately, due to working in the United States, while in school, Roy was barred from entering the US to work in his chosen profession. In 1945 Roy married his wife, Kay, and three years later moved to Prince George, where he opened a small grocery store and named it Royal Produce. On average, after the grand opening of the number one store, Roy and family opened up a new store every two years, until reaching a total of 14 stores. In the late 70s, Roy and his brothers sold the Royal Produce stores. Roy then entered retirement as a full time real estate agent, working for Ron Carson Realty Ltd., a new role hand hobby which he thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to the boys at Ron Carson for their comaraderie.

Roy's strong drive to run a successful business quickly spilled over to other theatres of his life; supporting and providing advice to family members; assisting the community and helping individuals and families during hard times by giving them credit to buy food.

Wherever Roy went, he always sported a tie and blazer, projecting a polished and professional image. Many people in Prince George will remember Roy as a quiet, humble and modest man. Roy would not have it any other way. Whenever Roy signed a greeting or birthday card, he would write the following words: "long life, prosperity and happiness". Roy achieved all three.

Roy was a lifetime member and past President of the Prince George Lions Club, past President of the Chinese Benevolent Society, past President of the Downtown Parking Commission, involved with the Prince George Senior Citizen Housing Committee and a great supporter of other community projects.

Special thanks to the hospital staff at the internal medicine unit at the Prince George Regional Hospital for assisting Roy in his time of need; to the staff at Simon Fraser Lodge for tending to Roy during his time there and to Roy's family doctors and Northern Healthcare staff for their caring consideration.

Roy will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Kay, his daughter Brenda, his sons Doug (Kathleen), Byron (Liping), his 8 grandchildren, Kim, Kris, Julianne, Jennifer, Kayla, Nicole, Zach and Ty; his great grandchildren Keiren and Aidan. In addition to his immediate family, Roy is survived by his sisters Irene, Eunice, Audrey and predeceased by his sister Connie and brothers Peter, Fred and Don.

Funeral services will be held in Prince George on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 282 Gillett St. and Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial St., Burnaby, on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 at 1:30 pm. Burial to follow in Ocean View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, 1475 Edmonton St., Prince George, BC, V2M 1S2. Condolences to the family may be sent to assmansfc@alderwoods.com .
