YIP - Jean, aged 91 of Saskatoon, passed away peacefully in the company of family on Tuesday, December 27, 2005. Jean's memory will be cherished by daughters, Suzanne Yip (Ivan Jen) (grandchildren Stephen and Leslie), and Yvonne Yip-Campbell (Larry Sadinsky) (grandson Heath Campbell); and sons, Bill (Rejeanne) (granddaughters Andrea and Melissa), and Ray (Sharon) (grandchildren Hayden, Kinsha and Wyndham). Jean was predeceased by brothers, Tom and Wah Jean, and her sister, Mei Yuk. Remaining sister, Suen Yuk, resides in Hong Kong. Jean was born July 30, 1914 in Toi San, China. In school, she excelled athletically as captain of her volleyball team leading them in provincial competition. Her future husband, David, emigrated to Canada as an enterprising young boy and had fashioned a secure life for himself managing a hotel, bar, restaurant, dance-hall, and grocery store in Beechy, SK. David made the steamship voyage back to China in 1933 to marry a beautiful young Jean and celebrated the birth of their first child, Suzanne, a year later. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 forced David to return to Canada alone. David ventured only once more to Hong Kong in 1937 where Jean and Suzanne had fled during the Japanese invasion. Shortly after their son Bill's birth in 1938, they were again tragically separated until July 16, 1950 following Canada's repeal of the Act. An enduring loyal and loving partnership ensued. David conducted business and Jean dominated the household. She nurtured family and friends utilizing her skills as a consummate chef, superb seamstress, and avid gardener. Undoubtedly, consequent to many years suffering constraints in war-torn China, she took great delight in socializing at Mah-Jong marathons held at her home and those of many close friends. She blossomed into a gregarious and gracious host who loved supporting events within the local Chinese community. The family is appreciative of the superb care provided by the staff in the facilities of the Saskatoon Health Region and, in particular, at her final home at the Circle Drive Special Care Home. Visitation will be at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, 338 4th Ave N, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30th. The Service of Remembrance, also at the Saskatoon Funeral Home, will be Saturday, December 31st at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. A reception follows the next day, Sunday January 1st, at the Mandarin Restaurant 245 20th St W at 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages anyone wishing to make a Memorial tribute to direct it to The Saskatoon Foundation 101 308 4th Ave N.
