my surname is ying meaning brave, hero, english, etc, i have a distant uncle from singaporean branch of family who's surname is spelt eng, our ancestoral village is in jiang men in canton province, there is a ying village there i have been to it. apparently there are more yings in northern china ie. beijing. do you have any other information about our ancestry? one theory is that we are descended from northern non-han chinese tribes and then acquired the name ying for services to the emperor at the time. have searched on internet to no avail, send me an email anyway of your knowledge.

Hi,
I'm from Singapore and have heard various accounts of how "ying" got conveniently changed to "eng" when they got into the country. "ying" is supposedly non-han chinese, from north east regions.

Dear friends and maybe distant relatives:
My surname is also YING, whose character is the one for English and hero. I am a Taiwanese. I know there are at least two groups of people who have this surname. One is of Manchu origin, and the other of Han origin. I believe I belong to the latter. My ancestors are also from Canton province. They were from Xinhui county.
To my knowledge, there are at least one other Ying family in Taiwan, whose ancestors are from Anhui province of China. Now their and my families both live in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
Glad to meet people with the same surname!

Hi!
My family is also the same YING as in hero and england...and my ancestors also hail from xinhui county in canton. I wonder if we are related as such. There's a relatively large group of extended Ying families in Singapore.

Wow! Maybe we are related!
Perhaps we can contact each other by e-mail. And if one day I go to Singapore or you come to Taiwan, we can meet each other's family?!
My e-mail is:

sure do! by the way, do you mind sharing the name of your father and grandfather with me? I can refer the names to one of my granduncles who is currently compiling the family genealogy for the Singapore branch. He may have some clue...
