Thank you, thank you, You have cleared up several questions that I had. One was who the step-children of General Taylor listed in the 1900 census belonged to. Another was the mother of his daughter, Irene. I only knew of two wives. I still have a few questions regarding Martha and Matilda Yielding. I have a copy of the marriage license from Franklin Co. Arkansas for A.J. Taylor, age 22 and Martha E. Yielding age 19. married 6 Nov 1879. Matilda, by my records is 4 years younger. My thinking is that possibly Martha died and Matilda raised Coleman. I can't find any other record so far for A.J. Taylor and Martha E. Yielding. Yet? Also the census for Joseph and Matilda does not list either as a second marriage. Of course we all know census can be incorrect. Just a thought. I will be contacting you direct as I will share info I have on the Merchants to see if it agrees with yours.

Hi,
I am the great grand daughter of Callie Donia Brenton and Robert Merchant. Josie Yielding signed her name as a witness on my Grandfather's delayed birth certificate. Also, my grandfather believed his father's middle name was Harrison and not Albert. However, am unsure of his true middle name. Do you have any proof? Also, does anyone know how Josie Yielding is related to my grandfather and great grandfather?
Thanks

Hi, I think without proof, that the Josie Yielding that signed your grandfathers delayed birth certificate may have been Robert Merchant's sister in law Josephine Brenton who married John Bradley Yielding brother to General Taylor Yielding, Matilda, Martha, Elvina, Jennie, James, and Vincent. Josephine was Callie's sister.

Okay on Robert Merchant it is the death record for him that states his date of birth was 1866. This leads him to be the son of Unknown Merchant and Charlotte E. Unknown who remarried Samuel Russell Curtis in Hill Co, Texas. The 1880 Census has this family listed in two different counties, in Hill Co and Shackelford Co, Texas.
in the Hill Co it has his name as Robt Merchant in the Shackelford CO it has his name as Albert.
This where the middle name of Albert comes in.
(I only went this way because of the birth year on his death record)

But this could be error, It could be that Robert Merchant was the son of Calvin Merchant and Sarah Unknown, this Robert was born in 1869. In the 1900 census for Robert and Callie he states his birth as Oct. 1869.
But Roberts death record for Aug 23 1904 in Kaufman Co, Tex states birth year was 1866 which fits the brother to Calvin Merchant who's name is Unknown at the present time.

I would love to know for sure which Merchant brother was the father of Robert. But we may never know. Both brothers had sons named Robert one born in 1866 and one in 1869. Both brothers are tied to this Curtis Family which makes it even more difficult to tell.
because Charlotte E. (Lottie) wife of Unknown Merchant (brother to Calvin) remarried Samuel R. Curtis.
Samuel R. Curtis's sister Mary E. Curtis married John Riley Merchant(his 1st marriage) son of Calvin Merchant. John Riley Merchant married Elvina Yielding (3rd Marriage) then Francis Carroll (4th marriage):
So it really boils down to, was Robert Merchant actually Robert Albert Merchant or Robert Harrison Merchant ? and which brother is actually his father.........
Was your grandfather John or James ?

Hi T-Kay
Read your reply to the Brenton Cousin and you seemed to set her straight on the Merchants. I just started back researching this past month. I know I owe you some pics and I will try and send those. My 1st thought to your answer was "oh, the tangled web we weave". So many inter marriages and same name kids that I get a new gray hair every time I try to research them.

To Great Granddaughter of Callie Brenton.
I am the gr-granddaughter of Josephine Brenton Yielding. Both were children of John Riley Brenton and Dorinda Bracey Brenton. My grandmother was the oldest child and was born in Arkansas. I would be glad to share information with you on this lineage. Contact me direct @ gwregier@excite.com
Maybe we can fill in some blanks together.
