My GGmom was Teresa Yetman, b 16 June 1850, St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland. Parents were John Yetman and Margaret Nolan. Spouse, William Biggs, b 4 May 1848, also St. Mary's Bay. They lived, and prob. died, in St. John's, where my paternal Gfather, and his siblings, were born. Any connection here?

Not sure if this will help anyone but here is a link the 1921 Newfoundland cencus:

My name is Mark Yetman, my father is William Yetman of Harbour Grace, His father was Jim Yetman and his father was Mark Yetman, my great grandfather. I believe he had 2 brothers. I might even have a picture I took in 1980. He was about 85-90 then.

Nice thing about the cencus it give date of birth.

Hope this helps.

As it's July 2003 you're probably aware already that the name YEATMAN derives from YE GATEMAN (as these people were "keepers of the Gate" hence" ye gateman. In old english, the 'g' was dropped. Thus... YEATMAN. The name is a Dorset name and it is pronounced Yetman. John Yetman sailed on The Mayflower...!

Burkes Peerage & Gentry has interesting information. Yeatmans were "landed Gentry" no-less!!

Janet, I may have a photo (or 2) for you. But first, you have to digest all of this...have a cup of tea ready.

(A note: I have not yet looked for the adopted Samual Yetman).

In my grandparents shoebox is a bw photo of 3 men standing on a porch. On the back is written “Samuel Yetman, Gill, and Jo…(illegible)." My gfather Alexander Quinton (b11 Jan 1878, Red Cliff, d23 Feb 1963, Medford MA) and guncle William (b7 Sep 1873) came to Chelsea/Everett/Medford about 1902-04. They had siblings Anastasia (b14 Apr 1876, Red Cliff) Theodore (b19 Aug 1885, S Bonavista Bay) plus others, who all stayed in Newfoundland.

I _believe_ my grandaunt Anastasia was married to the Samuel Yetman in the photo, and, from the 1935 Southern Bay Census, adopted a Samuel Yetman.

The second photo is of 2 older woman and a young boy--he looks about 5 yrs old. A surviving daughter of Gil and Gladys Yetman identified one of the woman as Anastasia Yetman AND a surviving daughter of Alexander's identified the same woman as Anastasia Quinton. If the woman truly is Anastasia Quinton Yetman, the young boy in this photo could be the adopted Samuel Yetman from the 1935 Census Southern Bay.

Hi, Grant. I am taking a chance that you will see this reply to your message from over 10 years ago! I'm hopeful since it looks like you edited your message a couple of years ago. My step-grandmother is a Yetman and I have been trying to research her ancestry for her. Her father is George Edward Yetman from Harbor Grace. He was born in 1897 and died in 1982. He married Maud Blanche Sugg, originally from Tilt Cove. My grandmother believes that he had a sister Florence and a sister May but I cannot confirm that for sure. I have also heard that there was some bad fishing boat accident and many Yetmans died at sea. That is all I know. Do you, by chance, have any information on George Edward Yetman or his family?

Thank you!
