Hi All
When checking on relatives who attended my old school, George Watson's Boys College in Edinburgh I got an unexpected result. My great grand aunt Emma Tyrrell married Edward Yerbury 1875 so Yerbury was one of the surnames I was researching. The surprise was Stewart Browning Yerbury was admitted to GWBC in June 1899 aged 16. His father was William Browning Yerbury of the Public Works Department, North West Provinces, India.
I have no clue who these are and if they are relatives or it's coincidence.
Anybody know anything about them.
Cheers Niall

I'm not going to be able to help you a great deal, Niall, because I can't connect both sets of Yerburys.
Your GG-aunt's husband was descended from Walter Yerbury who died in London in 1746 though he may well have had connections with Frome or Beckington in Somerset.
Yerburys with Browning as a middle name seem to descend from Benjamin Yerbury (1738 to 1784) who was described as being "of Froom" when he married Susannah Appleton in Essex in 1772. Having said that, I don't know anything about Stewart or his father - the only William Browning Yerbury I've found died in London in 1873 though he had a brother James Browning Yerbury who was in India in the 1850s, and who was a victualler in Chippimg Sodbury in 1861.
Sorry I couldn't be more use but at this stage I think it was just coincidence.

Thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind.
I agree that at this stage it looks like a coincidence at this stage but you never know where these asides lead you.

Hi, I was surprised and delighted with this tidbit about my great grand uncle Stewart Browning Yerbury. I had only a very few details about him and it is great to know that he went to school in Scotland and where. I can tell you more about the Yerburys if you are interested, mainly the family of Browning Yerbury; I am still on the trail to link with the larger group originating in Bradford on Avon. There is an interesting site, you may be able to find a connection there if you don't already know it. http://www.freshford.com/yerbury.htmBest regards, Helena

Hi Helena It's a while since I found Stewart so I can't remember the details, I'll try and refind them. My Yerburys trace back to Middlesex and came to Edinburgh c 1870 where they were photographers and I am in touch this gent's last direct relatives, although they aren't interested in family history. I hadn't found that web site, thanks. The thing that intrigues me know is whether your branch is connected to mine altherwise why the *** was he at GWBC.

Good question is why he was there.... seeing as much of the other family were all down in Dorset and Somerset as far as I can ascertain. Is it a particularly good school? I am also very keen to know where the Browning name comes in and why. Do your Yerburys have any Brownings amongst them? I found that site with the ancient family history of Yerbury interesting but a bit confusing... I am still trying to find the links between India and England before and after James, William, Stewart, and the rest. If you have any questions I am happy to try and help. Best, Helena

It is a good school but I would have thought there were better and better known public schools in England. Having said that when I was there I would say that a quarter of the pupils in our boarding house were from abroad. In addition there is a definite Yerbury connection with GWBC, they took the school photos for at least 30 years.
Otherwise I don't know.

Thanks for that. It would be interesting if the photographers had any photos from that era, specifically of Stewart when he was there, in their archives. It's a stretch but worth asking about I guess? If I make any progress in linking the Browning Yerburys with a particular branch, and figuring out how they came to Scotland, I will let you know. In the meantime, good luck! Best Regards, Helena

Hi, The James Browning Yerbury and William Browning Yerbury you mention in this post are my people. I am interested in knowing how to find the origins of the people with Browning in their name, it is a tradition that has carried on in our family. You mention Benjamin, can you give me any clues how he links to William and James? If you are also researching Yerbury it would be interesting to compare notes.
