I am looking for the father of a Rebecca Meriweather who married a Thomas Harris Bruges in 1665. Rebecca's mother was a Yerbury and her uncle was a Gifford Yerbury, and her brother was an Isack Meriweather. I would like to establish the father.

For you records, Gifford Yerbury died in 1712 and his will was probated in London. He was burried in Connock in the Parish of Chirton, Wiltshire.

Rebecca Bruges also died 1725 in Connock.

John and Francis are Yerbury family names. Some considerable number of years earlier there was a Christiapanne Yerbury who may have married into the Bruges family of Steeple Ashton.

Hi you might find some joy in looking Yerbury up in the History of Wiltshire books which I have seen in some large Librarys. The Yerbury family in those days was quite well known and so there are referencs to them their although it is very confusing since everyone seemed to be called John or Francis Yerbury. I have visited some churches in the Frome area and there are references to the Yerbury family on memorials etc. Sadly I kept no notes on my researches made in my teenage years.

I don't know if it is much help, but I have a YERBURY pedigree chart that covers the period you are interested in. There are a couple of MEREWETHER families that married YERBURYs.
Edward (1585-1648) and Anna (Southby) Yerbury
eleven children:
Edward, 1616
John, m. (1) Jane Merewether
Robert, 1623
William, 1620
Richard, 1634
Elizabeth
Ann, 1618
Jane
Honor
and Eleanor, who m. Dr. Alworth, "Chan. to the Bp. of Oxford." They had a daughter,
Jane, who m. Dr. Merewether. Children are not listed for them, but in brackets is noted: (The family of Serj. Merewether.) Whether this means that Dr. Alworth is name "Serj---," or his father was "Serj.," I don't know.
The YERBURYs were a very prominent family at Trowbridge. They were in the cloth business. Edward Yerbury, the father of the above children, was a Commissioner for King Charles I.
My interest in YERBURYs is a daughter of Richard, named Mary, who married Ebenezer Ledyard 24 Feb 1697 at Bromham, Wiltshire, England. I have no other information on Mary Yerbury.

Rebecca Warrener - Bruges connection

Do you have any Yerbury/Warrener connection. I have found that my Rebecca was a Warrener and not a Mereweather although there are definite connections. Rebecca Warrener's mother was a Yerbury brother of Gifford Yerbury (d. 1712) of Connock in the Parish of Chirton. I believe this Gifford married twice and according to his will he was not fond of her or her children. Rebecca's husband was Thomas Harris Bruges, son of Henry Bruges of Great Cheverell, grandson of Mathewe Burges of Steeple Ashton (1603-1663, great grandson of Henry of West Ashton and Anne More.

My YERBURY pedigree chart is pretty sketchy.
Only info I have is that Gifford Yerbury, a son of Thomas and Edith Yerbury of Bradford, was born 1599(?), and married Frances Hughes. They had three children, Gifford, Frances and Rebecca. I have no dates, and no more of that line. Thomas Yerbury was a clothier, and his will was dated 1612.
I wish I knew more.

Your information could eventually tie up. Rebecca Warriner could have been the daughter of Rebecca Yerbury. The wills of Rebecca and her Uncle Gifford Yerbury cross - refer. Rebecca Warriner married Thomas Harris Bruges in 1690, so she would have been born around 1669 and her mother say some 25 years earlier - around 1624.Gifford Yerbury also mentions a Richard Yerbury and his minister Nathan Cooper whom he left a violin.

Classification: Query
Rebecca Yerbury married Isaac Warriner (the correct spelling at last!) and their daughter was another Rebecca (who died in 1725 at Conock). Their son Isaac Warriner married Gertrude Ernle (1682-1709) in 1705 - she was the sister and co-heiress of Sir John Ernle (the last legitimate baronet) and their son Gifford Warriner (d. 1753) married Elizabeth Ernle, the baronet's daughter and the other co-heiress. This is how Conock Manor came to the Warriners (whose coat of arms is said to be still on the house), who lived there until the time of Gifford Warriner, who died in Cheltenham in the 1880's (?) when the house was sold. I am not descended from this branch!
