I am also a Yepiz having problems finding roots. My father told me that it was "custom" for the first born son to "slightly"change the spelling of their last name, therefore it is hard for some of us Yepiz' to find roots. My father also told me that most of his siblings were born in Potam, one of the Yaqui pueblo in Sonora. Another problem here is that his grandmother was Yaqui, so this would not reflect in the surname. I cannot count the number of times that I have been asked if my name was native american. My dad believed that his surname was derived from Yepes. If any other Yepiz out there has ancestry from Potam or one of the other 6 Yaqui pueblos (in Sonora) please let us know. Keep in mind that many of the original birth/baptismal records were lost in the Sonora area.

My mother's name is Cecilia Sortillon Yépiz, from Sonora, my grandmother's name is Alicia Yepiz Muñoz, and so you can find the Amarillas last name if you go deep into her background.
She told me she was born in a town near Navojoa, Sonora, 67 km from Obregón, Sonora or Cajeme (the Yaqui region). As far as I know, they've always been Yepiz, lots of them still live in Sonora (Southern region) and some have move to Guadalajara, and Baja.

Hi Fred, My Grandfather Salvador Fuertes Yepiz was born in La Paz Mexico and married Ermelinda Yepiz, who I believe was his second wife and she was born in Durango Mexico. My father always told us we were part Yaqui Indian from my grandmothers side. They migrated to the US and had 12 children. Most of us all live in California, but some have moved out of state. It sounds like you are related to our family some how. You should check out our family tree on ancestry.com under Yepiz Family. Brenda
