My great (5 times) grandfather was Stephen
Yeoman, son of Eleazer Yeoman b.1703, who was the son of Solomon or Samuel Yeoman b.
1668, who was son of Christopher Yeoman b.
1636 or 38 in England. Stephen was in 4th 5th regiments in American Revolution and died in 1829. He was hanged by the British as a spy, but the rope broke and they flogged him and sent him on his way. One of his sons was Walter b. 1782. Walter had a son Eneas b. 1808. Eneas had a son Allen Jackson Yeoman who was the father of Amanda Mae, my gr.grandmother. I was wondering if any of this matched with anyone else's ancestry. Thanks.

Do you have any more recent information on your Yeoman ancestry? My father-in-law, Bill Yeoman is from England-born there and moved here in his 20's-he is now in his 60's-it is an uncommon name-especially in the US. I will see if he has any knowledge of the peoples you have mentioned.

Karen,
I, too, descend directly from Stephen Yeoman and Abigail Fountain, through Walter Yeoman and Bethiah Fountain. Eneas Fountain Yeoman was Walter and Bethiah's oldest son, and I descend from their youngest son, Allen Jackson Yeoman, born 1824 in Washington Court House, Fayette, Ohio.
You probably already have this information, but in case you don't, I have Stephen (1747) and Abigail Fountain (1758) having six children. James (1775), Gilbert (1783), Mercy (1785), Walter (1782), Mary (1790), and Samuel F. (1793).

My records show also that Stephen was the oldest of three sons of Eleazer and Mary Hunt. Their other two sons are Gilbert and Moses.

Interestingly enough, I had heard a story of a Yeoman Revolutionary soldier who escaped hanging when the rope broke, but I did not know which of my illustrous ancestors it was. Thanks for your confirmation that it was Stephen Yeoman.

I have gleaned some information on Stephen from newspaper articles and obituaries that were written about his descendants--I hope this is useful info for you. Here it is.

Stephen Yeoman was born in 1747 in East Chester, W. New York. He died on 20 May 1829 in Rockville, Ohio. These notes formed part of the obituary of Allen jackson Yeoman, son of Eneas and Amy Baugh Yeoman. Eneas is the son of Walter Yeoman who was the son of Stephen Yeoman.

"The funeral services of Allen Jackson Yeoman were held at the Sugar Creek Baptist Church near Washington Court House, Ohio, September 5, 1920, at 11:00 A.M., after which the body was laid to rest in the Sugar Creek Cemetary. The pall bearers were the five sons of the deceased, Jasper, Clement, Stephen, C.D., and M.L., also the oldest grandson, Eldon A Huchinson,

A century ago, while the Buckeye State was yet primitive, there came to South Central Ohio, a Revolutionary soldier and pioneer, Stephen Yeoman. Emigrating with him were four sons one of whom was Walter Yeoman. The Yeomans settled in the vicintiy of Rock Mills, Fayette county, Ohio, in the year 1816.

No sooner had the blue smoke begun to curl from the crude chimneys built of sticks and mud than the construction of a church was begun. Stephen who was a member of the Baptist Church while a resident of the State of New York, assisted in the constitution of the Paint Creek Baptist Church, the first church organized in Wayne Township and one of the first churches founded in Fayette County.

Stephen Yeoman had four sons: Walter, Gilbert, Samuel, and James."

Another note:
Stephen Yeoman, father of all the Yeomans, emigrated from York State at a very early date, and settled on Main Paint [Creek], near Rockville. He built the first brick house on Main Paint. His sons James, Walter, and Samuel Yeoman, who is the father of Colonel S.N. Yeoman, now a large drygoods merchant in Washington Court HOuse. The Colonel served as a brave and pópular commander in the late rebellion [Civil War].

Ira Yeoman, son of James Yeoman, occupies the old homestead.

Enos [sp.?], Ely, Len, Milton, and Allen Jackson are sons of Walter Yeoman and are all successful and useful famers.

Mrs. Samuel Yeoman is still living in Washington Court House, occupying the residence of her late lamented husband, Samuel Yeoman, Esq.:

Another note:

"There have been in this township [Wayne Township] towns as follows: Rockville or Rock Mills, in survey No. 2925. This place has a history running back almost a century. The mills and a store and small shops made up the sum total. Stephen Yeoman was the first to locate there in 1815. He built the mill and constructed the dam."

This is the extent of the information I have on Stephen Yeoman . On his ancestors I have no personal info or histories, only dates and places. My sister-in-law just e-mailed me a few days ago and said that she has found "quite a bit" on Christopher Yeoman. I am waiting to hear back from her. Do you know where in England the Yeomans originated?

I will be looking forward to hearing back from you. I live in Mexico City at present and it is so wonderful to be able to do family research on the internet. I hope I have been helpful!

My great great grandfather was Allan Jackson Yeoman and I have him as born on July 23, 1833 and married Jan 2, 1859 in Pickaway Ohio to Amanda Melissa Sims (or Symmes). She was born Aug 3, 1842. I have a couple of copies of pictures of them. They had many children: Genevra, Jasper, Clement, Stephen, Cicero David, Martin Luther, Frances, Louella, Lucy, and my great grandmother Amanda (Minnie.) I have copies of the obits of Clement and Frances. I also have a copy of a poem written by Eldon Hutchison. Frances's obit is pretty long but Clement's is short enough. If anyone is interested in my writing any of these here, let me know, cause I am willing to give it to someone who is truly interested. I have no more info on Christopher Yeoman. I'll do some more looking through my stuff before writing again. I have photocopies of the stuff my aunt used to join the DAR, but not all of it is very clear. The pictures are especially poor because they are copies of copies, but I am still glad to have them.
