I am trying to understand this name, since it is my great grandmother's mother's last name name. She was from Puerto Rico, but the name itself does not seem Spanish. It is very unusual and I have only seen very few listings in Puerto Rico and in Venezuela. I have also run into Yejo's from Finland but I understand that it is a misreading of the name Yrjö. Any leads?

Who is your grandmother? My grandmother last name is Yejo and she is from Puerto Rico. As far as the roots of the last name, I believe they are scandinavian. The first King of Spain where my grandmother's family came from was a Goth (Pelayo) and Goths came originally from Southern Sweden (Gothenburg). Pelayo was the first King of Spain. He was not latin, Roman, but Scandinavian. I found a Finnish family in Minnesota which originated from Finland and immigrated to Minessota in the early 1800's. They were from Finland. This is how much I know. I am curious to hear, who your grandmother was, because this was the last name of my grandmother on her mother side.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. My great-great grandmother was Josefa Ensenat Yejo de Hernández. Her mother was Eusebia Yejo Ensenat.

Both of these ladies were born and lived in Puerto Rico in the 1800's.

The Scandinavian theory might be correct, since according to DNA studies I am 57% Finnish, Orcadian.

Hi Lilly:

My great grandmother was born in the 1800's in Guayama, Puerto Rico. Her name was Herminia Yejo. She had a sister and a few brothers. Her other sister was named Rafaela Yejo. I am not sure if your great grandmother was Rafaela. It cannot be Herminia because she only had one daughter Mercedez (my grandmother. She died giving birth. The other way to trace them is to join groups like searching for your roots, http://www.pr-roots.com/index.htm. You might find somethings here, but they do not have birth certificates for people born in PR prior to 1900's. You might have better luck using a local ancestry group that can direct you properly.

Thanks. Somewhere we must be related because all the Yejo's in Puerto Rico seen to Google back to Francisco Yejo, who care to the island from Curacao in the Late 1700's.

My mom told me recently that my great grandmother had a brother. He might be your great grandfather. I always thought that my great grandmother only had a sister, but my mom confirmed that they had a brother. Do you have any more information about Francisco Yejo and where he was from before he came to the island of Curacao and if any one else came with him to the Island. This information will greatly help with my search. Also wanted to know if you have tried contacting the group that I sent you the last via this website. They can be very helpful in the search.
