Hi,

My Dad came from that same village and so some of your info is correct. The Toms were near by and so my family "purchased" their US papers to come over, with my Dad being Sam Tom, when he arrived. I do know that they tended to end up in New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, and of course, San Francisco.

Good luck on your search.

Ken

I'm another Yee that was formerly living in the Philippines. I just recently migrated to Arizona on 2006.

My grandfather was Yee Hong Pan. He was a native of Macau, a city in China that was formerly under Portuguese control, as Hong Kong is to Britain. I don't know when he was born but I do know that he spoke Cantonese, just like any other people living in Macau. His father was Yee Wing Pao, and his mother was Chan Park To. My grandfather migrated to the Philippines because of Communism as I was told (but I don't really know). He also left his first family in Macau when he left for the Philippines. He had his second family in the Philippines and he revisited Macau for his first family. So, the first and second family met in Macau. The first family was pure Chinese who don't know how to speak English, the second family was an educated Filipino-Chinese, including my father. I'm part of the third generation starting from Yee Hong Pan. My father was Yee Wei Won. My grandfather was a successful businessman in the Philippines. My grandfather died on 1991, and his business was closed on 2006, the year when we migrated since my father was the one running the business.

I know it's long, but it's just a summary. I'm hoping that this would give you a lead. Your Yee family name may have started in Macau or any place nearby since hs spoke Cantonese, and my grandfather spoke Cantonese. There's a chance we may be a distant relative. GOOD LUCK!!

Researcher looking for records/artifacts related to Detroit Chinatown

To the relative of Yee Jock Leong:

In searching the internet for information on the On Leong Merchants Association of historic Detroit Chinatown, I stumbled upon your website. I am in awe to find that your relative has listed several merchant venues or business ventures in his address book that were located in the core region where chinatown was situated. Do you know your relative's relationship with the places listed in his address book? Did he shop there or did he do business?

I wish to know more about your relative and his history in the Detroit area (if any). I was hoping to contact you on this thread since there is no contact information on your website. My name is Chelsea Zuzindlak. I am a student at Wayne State University and researcher in the Detroit area. I will be compiling archived information and documents that uncover the history of a fairly ignored demographic in the Detroit area. At the end of my research, Friends of Detroit Chinatown in partnership members from other APA community groups, such as the Detroit Asian Youth Project will show an exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum in 2009.

If you are interested, I would like to forward you some information about the exhibit as well.

Best,

Chelsea

My Dad came with his father from Lo Pak Shan, to Pittsburgh, PA in 1929. Lo Pak Shan was in the Dik Hoi / Tit Ku Hueng area. My Dad passed away in 2003. He left me a map around where he thought it was. Lo Pak Shan means "Old White Mountain".

My question is - are anyone's else's ancestors from Lo Pack Shan and have they ever been there? I'd be interested in knowing what it's like there and how difficult it is to get there. Thanks for any help and I'd be interested in corresponding with other Yee / Yus.

I'm another Yee trying to find out about my Yee ancestry. rom what I've heard in my family, My grandfather was born in March 1903 in Hawaii as Nee Fong Yee and he later changed his name to Francis Yee. I have heard that he went to school at least a part of the time in Shanghai, and that his Family was from the southern Cantonese region of China. I'm not sure how much of this is true but any leads would be helpful. Thanks

No sorry. Different family I think. My dad's name is Wing. My mother was Patricia Dougherty. My uncles and aunts are Quon, Olga, Helen, William, John and James. All except Willie are still in Pittsburgh. Olga's husband, Robert, is also surnamed Yee and I think is from Pittsburgh as well. Robert's sister is Anna and she married into the Ung family. As I said, none of them are particularly forthcoming about family history. Have you tried the genealogy department at Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh? I hear it's good but I haven't had a chance to spend time there on any of my visits back. I will pass on your message to my brother Mike who still lives in Pittsburgh and is the source of some of my information. He's not terribly reliable when it comes to responding quickly to such queries however. It may take a while and I make no promises. I vaguely remember the name Yap Yee from somewhere who possibly lived over on the South Side of Pittsburgh - this is a distant childhood memory from the 60's so I could likely have the location wrong and I haven't lived in Pittsburgh for 23 years.

Anyway, good luck.

Sam Fou in Chinese means three cities. It is composed of three cities with Dick Hoy as one of the cities. The three cities straddled the Taishan/Kaiping (Hoi Sun/ Hoi Ping) border with Dick Hoy being part of Taishan. After the comminist takeover there was a redistribution and Dick Hoy became part of Kaiping. Sam Fou also became Kaiping's county capital. The name has changed also to Kaiping City.

My grandfather,Alfred(Chinese name unknown), was also born in or came from the village Dick Hoy( translation given to me by an elderly cousin of my grandfather). The name/s I have been given are Sam Fou Dick Hoy. This may be the names of two neighbouring villages where most of the people were related in one way or another. He was born around 1900/`1901 and was an artist here in Sydney, Australia. He died at about 81 yrs old. Also related to the Ben Yee clan.
Interested to hear from Lisa.
Blessings.
Re: Yee Family from Canton Province

Hello to all the Yee's out there! I am from an old Sydney, Australia branch of the Yee family. My grandfather was apparently born in China in a village called "Sam Fou Dick Hoy" and quite a few of his relatives both close and distant live here. His name was Alfred ( I don't know his Chinese name) and he was related to Claude and Arthur Yee and the Yee Ben clan. I believe he had a number of siblings and that at least one of them lived in San Francisco. When I have more concise info I will update.
Blessings.

Yee Git/Tom Yee

My grandfather was born in the village of Dick Hoi in Toishan County (Canton, China). His chinese name was Yee Git and his American name was Tom Yee. I have a "restored" birth certificate from San Francisco (earthquake and fire) that says his fathery's name was Yee Chee and his mother's name was You Shee, but I don't know how dependable this was. It's very possible that my grandfather took advantage of the fire and earthquake to "acquire" citizenship. He was born approximately 1880 and came to the US 1905-1907. He had a wife and son in China but I have no idea what their names were. He eventually settled in Akron, Ohio and had a Chinese laundry there. He had friends in Pittsburgh, PA (I believe his name was Billy Yat or Yot, not sure of the spelling) and a man named Hing. Any information would be appreciated.

My grandmother's name was Gee Shee. The family immigrated
to the US from Canton in 1938 - entering at the Port of Seattle.
They settled in Pittsburgh. I was recently told that my grandfather
had established himself in the US prior to bringing in the rest of
the family and that when he brought them over he also brought
various "paper sons" with him (which is the reason I've been
given for the reluctance of the older relatives to discuss the
immigration with me). I've just started to research the family
and have hit the "no good records of the maternal line" point
of researching a Chinese family. If you know anything about
my grandmother, I would love to hear it. She died several years
ago and my brother told me that while she was in the hospital,
the doctors discovered that she still had bound feet.

The area your father came from, Schlom Fou, is now part of Kaiping, no longer part of Taishan. The literal translation is "Tri-cities". It was on the border between Taishan and Kaiping. Officially it is now called "Kaiping City". There is a lot of Yee's from that area, especially Dickhoi.

Thanks so much for responding. Your grandmother's name caught my eye. My grandmother's name was Gee Shee and her husband was Yap Yee. One of their son's, Joe Yee, was my father. He and my mother, Julie McCulic, were married and divorced. I was raised in Pittsburgh by my mother. My father lived in Pittsburgh until the mid 70's and then went to Brookline, MA. He had another Chinese family, in Canada, I think. I met his Chinese wife, but do not remember her name. I think they had a son and a daughter. Any chance your brother's name is Wai Yam Yee?

Mark

Once again, thank you Mila for taking the time to reply. I agree, it sounds like different families. I also do not go back to Pgh very much, but appreciate the tip about the Carnegie Library. The one in Oakland was a favorite hangout when I was a boy. Best of luck in your career and march towards retirement. You will still wonder where all of your time goes.

Most of the stones in this area are of the 1800's. Most of the death dates were around 1885. I saw none that were later than 1909.
I have no other information as this is not my line.
