My wife's great grandfather's surname was YBAVEN and came from the Chihuahua area. I believe this must be a varient of the more common names of Ibabin, ybabin, Ibaben or Ebaben? I can find these names in the new world, but I have not been able to find it in the old world? My wife's mother thought he was French? But I have not been able to find it in either France or Spain. Could it come from Basque or Celtic roots? I have not been able to find it yet?

I came from Chihuahua, Chihuahua Mexico. My father's name was Jesus Chavez Alire. His maternal grandmother's name was Carmen Ibaben. I'll probably never find out where my family originally came from. The correct spelling is "Ibaben", I have and old legal document. My dad only had one brother. My dad's parents gave my dad to bachelor uncle (his father's brother) due his mother's illness. Unfortunately, my dad, Jesus Chavez Alire, passed away in 1979 here in California.

Dear Sir. I read your message with great interest. My great grandfather was named Pedro Ybaben. I do not know where he was born. My grandfather was born in El Paso, Texas in 1875. He married Eufimia Diaz who was born at LaJita ranch. According to family lore my great grandfather was a missionary from Spain. There must have been a title before the last name because from what I understand the y in spanish is the word AND. i.e. y BABEN. The Y was added to the last name to spell YBABEN. The last name was changed and Americanized in 1918. Doing research in high school I went to the San Antonio library and looked up my last name. The spelling I looked up was EBABEN. Years later I told my Aunt Inez about this. She said as a child she remembered her father spell the last name YBABEN. I was told that the family was in El Paso Texas. Some family members went west to New Mexico and California while the other went to Larado, Texas and then Cibilo, Texas in Bexar County. The family then moved to San Antonio, Texas where they settled. All contact was lost to the family that headed west.
