Some of the Yaxley's who lived in Norfolk and Hull, Yorkshire, England, changed their names to Overton. Does anyone know why?

Yes I think so, they are descended from Ursula Overton who had a base born son George in 1783 (Reepham Baptisms), but George subsequently called himself Yaxley, maybe his father`s name? Several sons switched their name from Yaxley to Overton and also Yaxley Overton as they fancied it seems.

Thanks for that. I know now that when one of the Yaxley families moved from Norfolk to Hull they all changed their name to Overton, including one son who stayed in Norfolk. There is a website that shows a lot of the Yaxley and Overton relationships. If you have not seen it just Google the 2 names and it should come up near the top of the results.

In the 1760s a George(?) Yaxley had illicit relations with one Ursula Overton. She had a son, also George who initially took the name Overton and then later Yaxley. His sons kept the Yaxley name, but a generation or two later, they changed to Yaxley Overton and then Overton. Possibly because Ursula was thought to be descended from Major General Robert Overton. I'm descended from these Overtons.

Hello Max
Thanks for your posting which is very interesting. Is there any proof that Ursula Overton was related to Robert Overton? After Robert died in Rutland in 1670s where did his descendants settle. Do you know please?
