My great-grandfather was Joel Yawn. I am at a roadblock in finding the parents of Joel. At the 1900 census he indicates that he and his parents were born in Georgia. At that time he was living in Lake Bird, Taylor County, Florida. In the 1910 census his wife, Martha Gibbs, revealed that she was a widow and that she was living in Worth County, Georgia. There is an 1880 census record that shows a Jesse Yawn living with his wife, Elizabeth Sorrell, and their children. They are living in Worth County, Georgia. A tree on ancestry.com indicates Jesse died on November 21, 1910. He is buried in Tift County which is adjacent to Worth County. I'm trying to connect Jesse to my Joel as father and son and possibly connect Jesse as a descendant of Jacob Yawn who lived in Newberry County, South Carolina. I know that my Joel was married in Wilcox County, Georgia in 1889 and recorded his ownership of 145 acres in a Property Tax Digest in 1890 in the same county. In more than one record he uses two letters to reveal his middle name: M. D. I've spent a lot of time trying to locate Joel and Jesse in the 1860 and 1870 census with no luck. If Joel is Jesse's son, it would not be unusual for Joel to not be residing with Jesse in 1880. Joel was born in 1862.
