I am a Yawn/Yan/Yon descendant (those are the spellings I have found for my branch of the family).
I descend through Benjamin A. Yawn who married Martha Snellgrove in Laurens County, GA, in 1819. They are my 3g grandparents.
Benjamin Yawn and Martha Snellgrove migrated from Georgia to Dale County, AL, by the 1850 census. Sons Derrell (sp?), Eli, and Seaborn followed him. All patented land in Dale County, AL, in 1858.
By the 1860 census Benjamin Yawn and son Seaborn were in Uchee Anna District of Walton County, FL.
By the 1870 census Seaborn Yawn/Yon was back in Dale County, AL, and I lose track of Benjamin and Martha. (I am presuming that they died in Florida but don't have details.)
Here's my descendancy from Benjamin Yawn and Martha Snellgrove:
Benjamin Yawn m. Martha Snellgrove Seaborn Yawn/Yon m. Elizabeth Mashburn Sarah Frances Yon m. James Henry Clark Cletie Coran Clark m. Minnie Lee Edwards Avis Elaine Clark m. Senors Hicks Jerry Merle Hicks (that's me) m. Donald R. Bailey
Note to William Harrell: I am intrigued by the family tree you posted in 2002 for Nicholas and Christiana Yonn of Orangeburgh District, SC. I'm especially interested in learning more about the Swiss/German connection. Can you provide sources for the Nicholas Yonn family family tree so that I can explore further to see how my Benjamin A. Yawn fits in.
Thanks for any help from anyone.

I am a descendant of Joseph Richard Yawn born in Georgia (Country) in about 1843. I am searching for his parents. I located a Joseph living with with Seabron Yon/Yawn on the 1860 US Census. Do you know anything about him.

For Margarette Yawn:
The Joseph Yawn living with the Seabron Yawn/Yon family in 1860 is not the Joseph Richard Yawn you are seeking.
Seaborn Yon is my great-great grandfather, and the Joseph Yon living with him in the 1860 Walton County, FL, census, is a first-born twin son (we believe the twin's middle name is Benjamin).
Seaborn Yon and wife Elizabeth Mashburn were born in the state of Georgia USA as were the first-born twin sons. They migrated to Dale County, AL, by the 1850 census; then to Walton County, FL, by the 1860 census; and back to Dale County, AL, by the 1870 census.
Sorry I could not help. Good luck in your search.

Hello Rick,
Yes, we are related. I too am a descendant of Benjamin Yaun and Martha Snellgrove through their son Seaborn (brother of your Alfred).
My descendancy:
Benjamin Yaun m. Martha Snellgrove Seaborn Yon m. Elizabeth Mashburn Sarah Frances Yon m. James Henry Clark Cletie Coran Clark m. Minnie Lee Edwards Avis Elaine Clark m. Senors Hicks Jerry Merle Hicks (me--female) m. Donald Randall Bailey
Are you acquainted with Lucy Ward, who now lives in the state of Washington? She is also descended from Alfred Yon.
We also have a cousin, Allie Yohn Bunting, who lives in Florida and is descended from Alfred and Seaborn's brother Eli Yon who married Martha Gunter.
Another cousin, Leroy Toole of Jackson County, Florida, is descended from one of the first-born twin sons of Seaborn Yon and Elizabeth Mashburn. A number of Yons are buried at Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Jackson County.
Do you know anything about the Nicholas and Christiana Yon of the old Orangeburgh District of South Carolina in the 1700s? They and some of our Snellgrove ancestors were fellow church members of the Rev. Johan (John) Giessendanner, who brought groups of settlers from Europe to Orangeburgh District. (The Rev. Giessendanner's church journals are housed in the South Caroliana Library at the University of South Carolina. They chronicle the life events (births, christenings, marriages, deaths) of his parishioners and include several events for Nicholas and Christiana Yon as well as at least one of our Snellgrove ancestors.) Since the Yon and Snellgrove families knew each other in Orangeburgh District, it makes sense to me that the families migrated, perhaps together, to Georgia, where Benjamin Yaun married Martha Snellgrove in 1819 in Laurens County. By 1850 Benjamin and Martha, along with their sons Eli, Derrell, and Seaborn were in Dale County, Alabama, where they patented lands in 1858. By 1860 Benjamin and Martha, along with Seaborn and Elizabeth, were in Walton County, Florida. By 1870 Seaborn and Elizabeth were back in Dale County, but I do not find Benjamin and Martha in the 1870 census.
Allie Yohn Bunting disagrees with the above theory about the Orangeburgh Yons. Do you think my theory is worth pursuing?
Have you done any research on our Snellgroves? I have a large notebook on the Snellgroves. I downloaded it from Charlie Snellgrove's site a few years ago. The site has since been taken down. If you would like to know more about Martha Snellgrove's ancestors, I can share that with you. (We are very distantly related to President William Jefferson Clinton through our Snellgrove line.)
Is there any documentation that Jacob Youn is the father of Benjamin Yaun?
Please reply and tell me what you know about our Yon and Snellgrove ancestors. If there's anything I can share with you, let me know what you want.
