His diverse capabilities were generously shared to the benefit of his family, the growth of the McAllen community, and the spread of the Christian gospel. His life was blessed by 65 years of marriage to his adoring wife, and God's gift of their four wonderful children, plus eleven precious grandchildren. Don's reputation as an honest, hard-working, Christian husband, father and grandfather was well known in the community and beyond. He served as a leader in his church, chairman of the McAllen Community Development Council, and Lions' Club President. Gardening, painting, piano, birding, and laughter were his favored hobbies, in addition to the pleasure of his treasured family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobson and Vennie Yancy, his son Keith, and his brother, Bob. Don is survived by his wife, Peggy, of McAllen; son Kevin (Janet) of Dallas, daughter, Patia (Mark) Walker of McAllen, son David (Mari) Yancy of McAllen; sister, Doris Rose Hinson of Lufkin; grandchildren, Scott Yancy of Austin, Bret Yancy of Austin, Brian Yancy of Austin, Payton Yancy of Austin, Sarah Selden Yancy of Dallas, Brooke Yancy of Austin, Courtney Yancy of Austin, Julia Walker of College Station, Michael Walker of McAllen, Kathryn Yancy of Dallas, Kevin Wallace Yancy of Dallas, and five nieces and nephews.

Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, Kniffin 2nd ed., 1885 Crittenden Co.

L.F. BENNETT, Crittenden County, was born in Henry County, Tenn., October 17, 1848. His parents, Larkin and Harriet (Wheeler) Bennett died when our subject was quite young, and he was placed under the care of an elder brother. At the age of fifteen he enlisted in the Confederate service or
army in Company H, Seventh Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Owing to his extreme youth, he was not required to do active service, and acted as orderly for his colonel. He remained in the war one year, and on his return went to Caldwell County, near Fredonia, and worked as a farm
laborer for about a year. Since then he has been more or less engaged in merchandising, either as a clerk or proprietor. He has been engaged in business at Fredonia, Dycusburg, Crittenden Springs and Paducah. He was married May 21, 1872 to Annie P. Yancey, who was born May 26, 1851. Four children have resulted from this union: Leon, born November 11, 1874, died February 20, 1877; Clifton, born April 12, 1880, and Cron., born February 7, 1885. Mr. Bennett was a member of the I.O.O.F. and K. of the G.R., until they ceased to have a lodge at Dycusburg.
MINE EXPLOSION - Kills two Yancey Brothers - 1959

Robbins, TN Gas Explosion In Mine, Mar 1959
Posted March 24th, 2009 by Stu Beitler
NINE KILLED IN MINE EXPLOSION.
GAS CAUSES ACCIDENT AT ROBBINS.
ALL MINERS INSIDE SHAFT WERE KILLED; CO-OWNER SURVIVES.
Robbins, Tenn. (AP) -- A gas explosion ripped the interior of a small coal mine near here Monday, killing all nine men in the shaft.
The blast occurred at 8:30 a.m., EST, about a half hour after the men entered the mine.
It took rescue workers five hours to recover all the bodies, which were badly burned and torn. The bodies were found about 4,000 feet from the mine entrance.
The victims, all of whom were said to be related either by blood or marriage, were:
BURT PHILLIPS, 52, and his two sons, HUBERT, 30, and ARZO, 17; OSCAR WEST, 47; BERNARD, 33, and WILLARD YANCEY, 36, brothers; JOHN L. PIKE, 48; ELMER PHILLIPS, 38, and ED CHITWOOD, 50. All of the men lived in or near Oneida, the Scott County seat 18 miles north of here.
BURT PHILLIPS and OSCAR WEST were operators of the mine, described as a family enterprise which normally employed eight or 10 persons.
The mine, in the Cumberland Mountains about eight miles East of here, produced 50 to 60 tons of coal daily. The fuel is distributed by trucks.
Sheriff D. E. Rosser, one of the first to reach the scene, said:
"There is no doubt about gas being the cause of the explosion."
AUDIO ACRES, a veteran miner who assisted in the rescue operations, said the gas pocket apparently collected over the weekend.
"The mine's ventilating system was cut off over the weekend," ACRES said. "This apparently allowed gas to collect."
ACRES and other miners expressed the opinion that a spark from an electric motor touched off the explosion.
Federal and state inspectors who came here from Knoxville, 75 miles to the southeast, withheld comment pending an investigation. They helped supervise rescue operations.
Smoke which filled the shaft and fallen rocks loosed by the explosion slowed recovery of the bodies.
Rescuers said the first four bodies were found face downward as if the men were running toward the mine entrance.
Scores of relatives and friends of the victims milled around the entrance until the bodies were brought out.
The only mine employe who survived the explosion was W. O. WEST, 50, brother of OSCAR WEST, and one of the co-owners.
WEST said he was working at the tipple about 50 yards from the entrance when the blast occurred.
"I heard the explosion and the next thing I knew coat dust came gushing out of the mine and covered me," he said.
WEST hastily organized a rescue party.
Kingsport News Tennessee 1959-03-24

Bernard and Willard were sons of Lemuel Godby Yancey of Scott Co., TN.

Hello Dennis. I'm a lil confused. Is this case somehow related to Charles. S. Yancey's Will or is it a piece of it? Do you know how I could possibly go about getting a copy of his actual will? I would like to see if he left any possible slaves to to his heirs, hoping to find my ancestors listed if so. Thanks for posting.

Re: DEATH - Curtis F Yancy
Former Quogue resident Curtis F. Yancy died on February 25 2013. He was 81.

One of nine children, he was born in Coleman, Texas, to Eldredge and Lola Yancy, both of whom predeceased him. Married for 54 years to Wanda Mioduszewski, who was born and raised in Quogue, together they travelled with their children to the military bases at which he was stationed.
He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars, serving with the 38th Air Rescue and 31st Tactical Fighter Wing in the U.S. Air Force. His pride in being an American was evident throughout his military career, during which he was the recipient of the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, Air Medals with 14 Oak Leaf Clusters and 14 others.
He flew 199 combat missions, saved 25 lives and recovered 34 people in Vietnam. He always lived by the code of the Air Rescue man.
After his retirement from a 20-plus year career in the Air Force, he went to work for the Veterans Administration in environmental management in Kerrville, Texas; Waco, Texas; Charleston; St. Louis, Missouri; and Phoenix. He took much pride in his association with the VA.
After his retirement from the VA in 1996 after 22 years of service, he went on to become a genealogist, combining his love for family and history.
Throughout his life, he has been a member of the Phoenix Jaycees, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, honorary member of the Texas Rangers, the American Legion, the Quogue Fire Department, the National Helicopter Society, the Masons, the Disabled American Veterans, the Romeo Club and his Odesa High School class.
Survivors said with his quick wit and kindred spirit, he has touched many lives and was a hero to most. He would be researching family history, emailing his friends and if he wasn’t reading a Western he would be watching a Western. He was always willing to help others in need. And he despised mushrooms.
He is survived by four children, Curtis Yancy and his wife Terri, Milessa Bankston, Christopher Yancy and Milynn Yancy; four grandchildren, Cody, Dustin, John Curtis and Brittniee; three great-grandchildren; and five siblings. He leaves behind many rescue pets, including his faithful dog, Zippy.
Interment with full military honors will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 5, at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. A memorial gathering will follow at noon at The Glendale Civic Center in Glendale.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Heritage Funeral Chapel in Peoria, Arizona.
