Subject: Zora M. Yancey
I thought that you might like to have an update on Zora M. Yancey. She
married Charles A. Knight in LaBelle, MO in 1900. She was living there with
her parents, James and Maria Yancey. She studied pipe organ in school and
college. In 1910 the Knights moved to Tecumseh, OK where Charles practiced
Law. Zora played the organ for years in churches. About 1922 to 1932 she
was the Supervisor of Music in the Oklahoma State Industrial School for
In 1912 she became a member of Chapter W, of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. In 1919
she was elected the Oklahoma State President of that organization. In 1921
she was appointed to the Board of Trustees of The P.E.O. Record. That is the
official magazine of the International P.E.O. Sisterhood. In 1931 she was
elected president of the Sisterhood. She served two years. In 1941 she was
appointed a member of the Board of Trustees of Cottey Junior College in
Nevada, MO, which is owned by the Sisterhood. She served as chairman of that
group from 1943 through 1945.
Other organizations that she belonged to were: The Christian Church,
Synthetic Music Club, the Oklahoma Council of Child Development and the
Daughters of The American Revolution. She received many honors throughout
her life and at her death.
She died Monday 23 August 1965. Services were held on Wednesday in the
Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh, OK.
