"Uncle John" was from Missouri. Before or after marrying Edith Van (from Boston?) in 1895 he/they moved to Washington State. He was a judge in Port Orchard, an early worker for Native American rights. They later moved to Los Angeles, where he also served as a judge. After "Aunt Edith" died early 1930s) he moved to San Diego to live with his foster daughter, my mother. John and Edith had no children of their own. Uncle John was the world's best grandfather. He died in 1946 and I still miss him! I would love to learn more about his family 'cause he was sure family to me! Any bells ringing?
