Our family came from Alsace-lorraine in the mid 1800's. The name spelling was changed. However a Jacob Yahl is on several census records that predate our family. Also he was born in Lancaster,PA Does anyone have any knowlege of this person?

My ancestors also came from Alsace-Lorraine but I am not familiar with Jacob. Philip was my direct ancestor and he settled in Ohio. These two may be brothers.

I would love to correspond with you regarding your branch of Yahl's. My ancestor is Nicholas Yahl, brother of Phillip and Michael. I too am trying to figure out the connection with Jacob. I found him in the naturalization records. He was naturalized in Indiana.

I don't have a lot of information on Philip Yahl. Most of what I do know comes from a book about the history of Auglaize County, Ohio.

Philip was born in the French province of Alsace and served in the Crimean war in the middle 1850's. After that he came to America and located at Marion, Ohio. Shortly after relocating to Marion, he joined the 4th regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served for three years under Generals Hooker, Grant, and McClellan. His infromation is under Philip Yale in the Union Army's muster rolls.

In the Early 1870's he relocated again to St. Marys, Ohio and had 4 children with his wife, the former Margaret Diebold who was also of European birth. Their childrens' names were Louis, Jennie, Charles and Frank. My family is descended from Louis Yahl who owned and operated the local grocery. I was lucky enough to obtain some old stationery from the old L.M. Yahl Grocery recently.

If you have any other info, I would love to read it!
