Dear Josephine -
You may have already traced many Yaccinos in the Chicago-land area. We have know for years about our relatives from Hazelton, PA.

My father, Girard H. Yaccino (68) and his brother Michael W. Yaccino (passed away 2 years ago at age 74), were the children of Michael Yaccino (my grandfather), died in approx 1967. Michael's father is John Yaccino the one you mention in your email, and is one of the originals who came to the U.S.

I haven't committed it to memory, but as I recall - my grandfather Michael had a sister Mary (who just died this year, roughly 95 years old, under the name DeMatteo - also in Chicago suburbs...my father and Dominic Dematteo stay in loose touch because of Mary. Besides Michael and Mary, I believe there was another brother named Charlie, who I met a few time in the late 1960's - past his prime as he was a famous bike racer in the Midwest. His name, Charlie Yaccino is known at several racing tracks even today in Glenview, IL and all throughout Wisconsin. I am not surprised anymore when an elderly person sees my last name and says, " are you related to Charlie Yaccino the bicycle racer!" Continueing on...John had children named Michael, Mary, Charlie and I believe Harry or Jack...not sure, but my dad knows. John decided to move to the Chicago area and was in the building industry..I think a mason. My Dad remembers going back to Hazelton to visit the "farm" during some summers where his Uncle Harry or Jack lived.
You could probably clear up some of this about my grandfathers brothers.

Like I said, my dad and his sister-in-law know the facts much better. In fact, in the early 1970's I did a geneology project and with the help of my aunt Ruth (married to my deceased uncle Michael) I first learned about Angelina DeZagottis. By the way, what nationality was she? Italian and Spanish?

Well, it's late and I had better retire for the evening. Possibly we can continue this chat another time. Until then, stay well and let us know if you have this charted out, possibly in an excel file. I'd be interested in filling in any holes on this end and would like to understand more about where we came from and why the family came to U.S.

Regards -

Michael G. Yaccino (43)

Hi Mike,
I was the one who posted that request on ancestry.com. That was posted a long while ago, since then I have found many death dates and obituaries, also many relatives online a well. Attached please find my family tree as far back as I can go with it under the Yaccino surname. I will hook you up with another lady who has traced the Yaccino (Iaccino) name back much further.

DeZagottis is 100% italiano. Originally Zagottis in Italy, it changed to Dezagottis somewhere between immigration to America I believe. The de just means "of". A lot of Italian family names had the de prefix added when they immigrated to America, many of them lost their original family names as well, they would use their first name of their father, with a de added. (DeAngelo, DeAndrea, DeAmato, etc or just a D'Angelo etc)

Buried in Hazleton PA, at MPB cemetery is Mariatonia Santoro Yaccino, mother to Michael, John and Josephine.
Their father was Francis (Francesco) Yaccino, I have no idea where he is buried. The main blood lines in our tree, that keep reoccuring are Dezagottis, Santoro. There are so many examples of 1st cousins marrying I lost track of them.

John Yaccino married Angelina Dezagottis, John's sister Josephine also married a Dezagottis, Vincenzo Dezagottis. He is Angelina's brother.
Michael married Rose Sacco. These were the the siblings who came over from Italy.

You can fill me in on the John Yaccino line, all I have is what I saw in the census before he left Hazleton for Chicago, I do have John Yaccino's death certificate however.

Good Luck!

email me for my current family tree

Brian,
I am Mike Yaccino's first cousin, daughter of Michael, grandaughter of Michael Paul Yaccino, greatgrandaughter of John and Angelina. John and Angelina had four sons and one daughter (Fred, Joe, John, Mike, Charlie, and Mary). As my cousin stated, Mary was the last of the siblings. Her married name was D'Amico, not DiMatteo.

We had always been told that Angelina was part Spanish, which is why Mike asked you about that. We have been in touch with the branch of Yaccinos in Pennsylvania, as Mike related to you. I had forgotten the Sacco name, but now that rings true. One of the Hazleton cousins traveled to Italy and found his was to Cosenza and Celico. In fact, a relative is the current mayor, or was when he visited. Do you know much about the Calabrian Iaccinos who immigrated to Argentina?

How are you related to all of this? I would love to see your family tree.

Thanks!

Geri

Hello Brian,
My name is Claud Owens. I was married to Marna Yaccino who died in 1983. I am trying to build a Yaccino family tree for Marna's three children. So far I have a few names going back to John, but I lack things like dates of birth and death. Marna's father's name was Frederick Ricardo Yaccino. I have his date of birth at about 1903 and place of birth Hazelton, Pennsylvania. I also have that he was one of the sons of John and Angeline. At that point I hit a dead end.
I am hoping that you may have more specifics that will help in this project. I have been in contact with Gerri Yaccino who gave me some info, but her info is mainly names. She does not have any of the specifics I am looking for. Anything you can provide will be more than welcome.

Respectfully,
Claud
