I have been researching my daughter-in-law' ancestors and one of her
great great grandfathers was Julian Xiques born about 1866 in Cuba per
1900 and 1910 Census. I found him in the 1880 Census CD in 15th Ward,
29 district of New York City, Manhattan, age 17 born Cuba enumerated as
son with Ramon Xiques age 37 born Cuba, a segar (sic) maker and Jennie
Xiques age 17 born NY parents born France. There was another son Ramon
age 1 born NY.

Obviously Julian is not Jennie's son.

>From entries in the IGI of later children Jennie was Eugenie Leconec.

Now the interesting part. I find in the 1880 Census CD a Ramon Xiques
age 37 born Cuba, cigar manufacturer living in Richmond, Staten Island
NY with Louisa age 24 born NY parents born France and daughters Emily 4,
Jenny 2 and Josey 1. From extracted birth record for Jenny in the IGI,
Jennie is also a Lecornec.

Which scenario is more likely?

1. There were two Ramon Xiques age 37, cigar maker born Cuba living in
New York City.

2. The same man was married or living with two women, probably sisters.

3. Another logical explanation.

Just saw your message while researching my grandfather's side of my family. I was raised by my grandparents, Philip (Felipe) and Loretta Xiques and therfore heard many conversations re relatives. Philip was the son of Ramon, brother of Emilio, Jennie, Pauline, Ruth, Louisa, and Regina (7 of 9 children of Ramon and Louisa survived). It has been long rumored in my family that Ramon had another family (in Cuba) and the name "Julian" was often mentioned as part of the other family. Hope this helps.

Ramon Xiques was my greatgrandfather. He married Jeanne LeCorniche (spelling?) and lived with her and her mother. He and Jeanne had 11 children. The youngest daughter (not the youngest child) was my grandmother, Evelyn Eugenia Xiques. The family is buried in the Moravian Cemetery in Richmond Staten Island NY. When I go to put the grave blanket this year I will try to take pictures of the headstones. Jenny would be Jeanne. I don't know about any Louise or Louisa, but Jeanne's middle initial may have been L. My oldest sister has Louise as her middle name, so it could be a family name. Ramon spoke mostly Spanish and some English, Jeanne spoke mostly French with some English. I would believe that the census taker didn't care enough to get the facts straight before I'd believe Ramon lived with two women. Anyway, the research is fascinating...

My last name is Xiques and I am doing some research also. I just started and have only gotten back to my great grandfather. My grandfather told me we moved from Cuba in the mid 1800's into New Orleans and was in tobacco. My 2nd great grandfather moved to Memphis to grow tobacco. That is where my family stayed. I unfortunately, at this time, don't have very many names. I hope to find out some more and will share some info on here when I find it. If anyone has any info for me, that would be great. My Grandfather is Edward Eugene Xiques, Sr. and lives in Memphis. Had a brother George. Thanks in advance. Sorry I don't have more right now.

Hi!

Ramon and Jennie are my great grandparents as well. I have done a lot of research on the Xiques. Who was your Xiques grandfather/grandmother? My grandfather was Henry Xiques, who was their second son. Ramon was quite a womanizer!! Besides his family in Cuba, where he had a son named Julian, he also was involved with two women in New York. Louisa lived in Staten Island and Jennie (as she was called by her family) lived in Manhattan. Louisa and Jennie were half sisters. They shared a father, Albert Le Cornec. Albert's second wife was Annette (our great great grandmother) but all the grandchildren (of which my mother was one) called her Osma. Albert died when the children were young and Osma supported them as a seamstress. They lived in poverty. Osma only spoke French but Jennie was fluent in English and French (and adored opera.) Ramon had children with both Louisa and Jennie but the families were completely estranged. Ramon financially supported Jennie but Louisa's family lived in poverty.

Jennie's grandchildren absolutely worshipped her and I have spoken to a lot them! She sounds like a remarkable woman.

Ramon owned a billiards/pool/cigar store located in Manhattan at 83 Bowery. Several of his sons, including my grandfather Henry, went into business with him.

Both Louisa and Jeannie had very large families. Ramon did not, by the way, marry either of them, as is evidenced in his will, which I have a copy of.

Here is interesting reading which gives you a flavor of this astonishingly complex family. Ramon Jr. mentioned in this article was the oldest son of Jennie and Ramon.

We can talk more about this when I hear back from you! Looking forward to it!

Your grandmother, Evelyn, was actually the oldest daughter of Ramon and Jennie, not the youngest. And Evelyn was quite adored by her father (as well as an outstanding pianist! ) Ramon left her a brownstone in Greenwich Village when he passed away. My grandfather, Henry, was your grandmother's brother. He named one of his children Evelyn after your grandmother.

(and Ramon did have two women. Besides the evidence in research, I spoke to several family members who knew this! Astonishing really!)
