seems like Andrew is not in the 1870 census so he must have died. his wife Eliza is living with dau Hannah Diamond age 25 and her dau Eliza age 13. I think in South Jersey.
Lizzie as she is called married James H Lewis on April 11 1874. she died April 12th 1876 in White Hill NJ it says she was poor. James died Oct 3 1875 also poor. And Mary Anna married Charles Bishop on Oct 3 1861
Bonnie

Thanks for posting the info on Susan’s death. I found a death record for John Wonderlin at FamilySearch. John’s age is wrong in the death record. All other records indicate he was born about 1816, not 1806.

I am still curious about how the notice got posted in a North Carolina newspaper.

Curt

Steve

As I said my mother’s maiden name was Wonderland but the family always pronounced it Wonderlin.

The John Wonderland who died in 1842 is the father of Aaron and Peter. I have John’s will which includes Peter as one of his two heirs. The other was his adopted daughter Hope Wonderlin. Aaron married in Burlington County before moving to Ohio. That is probably why he is not mentioned in the will. I have the name of John Wonderland’s first wife, Amy Pitman, from the deed settling the estate of Amy’s father. John Wonderland was listed as an heir because he was the husband of Amy who was deceased. John married his second wife, Phoebe Doughty on February 4, 1822. I have found no other person who could be a reasonable candidate to be Aron, baptized June 15, 1789, or his father John.

Peter Wonderland, son of John and Amy, was married in Burlington County. In the 1830 census he was living in Waterford Township, Gloucester County, and had 2 sons. My ancestor, James Wonderland, enlisted in the Civil War Army at age 46. When he applied for a pension one of the witnesses was a Peter Wonderland. This is what makes me think Peter was his father and what I am trying to prove.

This is less certain but I think John Wonderlin, born about 1818, was the other son of Peter. The age is right to be one of the sons in the 1830 census and in the 1840 census you will find John Wonderlin in Waterford Township. There is an older male in the household.

Curt

Hi Curt,
Thanks for the info. I have no direct connection to Aaron - at least not one I have found. His wife Hannah may be the daughter of my 5th great-grand uncle but I have not been able to verify that part of my Rockhill line.

Which John Wonderlin is the father of Peter? I have a John Wonderlin that was b. 1760 and died 1842 - I am wondering if that is the father of this Aaron.

The furthest back I have been able to verify on my Wonderlin line is John Wonderlin (1818-1898) who was married to Susan. So far I have three sons for them: William (b. 1839), George (1841-1909 - this is my line) and Charles (b. 1852). I don't have anything else that goes back further.

I am hoping to make a trip to NJ the week of Thanksgiving and was thinking of visiting the Historical Society there in Burlington to do some research.

Steve

Steve

Do you have a connection to Aaron Wonderlin who married Hannah Rockhill?

I was recently at the Burlington County Historical Society researching my GG Grandfather James Wonderland. I have reason to believe he was the son of Peter Wonderland, not yet proven. Peter was the son of John Wonderland and Amy Pitman, proven. I found something that might be of interest to you.

This was recorded in the Registry of Baptisms By the Methodist Elders and Deacons of the New Mills Circuit 1788-1789. The New Mills Circuit operated out of Pemberton, Burlington County, New Jersey.

June ye 15th 1789 Baptized by John McCafky Deacon
Aron Wonderly son of John Wonderly

I have seen the Wonderland/Wonderlin name interchanged with Wonderly. This sure looks like the baptism of Aaron.

Curt

Boardman, Ohio – There will be funeral services on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home, 4221 Market Street, Boardman, Ohio for Ruth Krigsman, 101, formerly of Struthers, Ohio who died Saturday evening, April 2, 2011, at Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman.

She was born Nov. 11, 1909, in Beaver Township, Mahoning County, Ohio the daughter of the late Archie and Clara Obenauf Wunderlin and moved to the Youngstown, Ohio area over 44 years ago. She graduated from North Lima High School.

Ruth was a homemaker and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Happy Days Senior Citizen Group at the church.

Her husband, Solomon Krigsman who she married on May 27, 1944, died Nov. 1, 1985.

Ruth is survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband, Ruth was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard Wunderlin, Burton Wunderlin and Carl Wunderlin; and three sisters, Esther Norwood, Helen Shandor and Thelma Wunderlin.

There are no calling hours.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the care that the doctors, home healthcare givers as well as the staff, at Shepard of the Valley, Boardman gave to Ruth.

http://www.vindy.com/news/tributes/2011/apr/05/ruth-l-krigsm...

I also have the will of John Wonderlin.

John Wonderland married first Amy Pitman. This is form the will of Amy’s father.
In 1795 John Wonderland was appointed a trustee of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New Hanover Township. This was probably the Pointville M.E. Church. Wrightstown was created in 1918 from New Hanover and North Hanover Townships.
John Wonderland married second Phebe Doughty on February 4, 1822, in Burlington County. Hope may have been Phebe’s daughter from a previous marriage but I do not know this.
Peter Wonderland married Hester Anderson in 1811 in Burlington County.
The 1830 census lists Peter Wonderland living in Waterford Township, Gloucester County with two sons, one 10 to 15 and one 15 to 20.
The 1840 census lists John Wonderland living in Waterford Township. There are three males in the household, one under 5, one 20 to 30, and one 60 to 70. Is the older man Peter?
My 2nd great-grandfather was James Wonderland born about 1817 in Burlington County. When he applied for a Civil War pension one of the witnesses was Peter Wonderland.

My unresolved question. Was Peter, son of John Wonderland and Amy Pitman, the father of James and John Wonderland? The ages of the two sons in the 1830 census are in the right age bracket.

The records of the M.E. Church may answer a lot of questions. If only we could find them.

Curt

Hi Curt,
Thanks for the info. I had known about Mable and Myrtle (or Muriel) through the NJ Mirror:

NJ Mirror Obit 1883: WONDERLIN.--In Burlington, July 15, Mabel and Murrell, twin daughters of George and Mary F. Wonderlin, aged 2 months and 1 week.

The others are new to me. I have not been able to find where any of these Wonderlins (lands) are buried. I found a few graves in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Burlington these were mostly connected to Charles C. Wonderlin (b. 1852-1901). He, his son William (1877-1945) and another son Charles (1879-1943) along with Charles Jr.'s wife Lennie (1880-1922) and daughter Mabel (1907-1922). Other than these I haven't been able to find anyone else.

steve

I found this entry in the marriage index at the New Jersey Archives website.

William Wonderlin married Elizabeth Maquet in Mt. Holly on December 1, 1859. The record number is BK C-2, Page 189. This would be page 189 of the Burlington County marriage register that contains December 1859. It should have the name of the fathers and the given name of the mothers but not their maiden names.

I found these names at the death index at the New Jersey Archives.

Maple and Myrtle Wonderlin, twins, age 2 months, died July 15, 1883 in Burlington City. The certificate numbers are 1883-84-12-W11 and 11883-4-12-W12. These certificates should have the name of the father and maiden name of the mother. I have not seen anything about these twins prior to finding this.

Charles Wonderland, age 8 months, died in Chester Township in 1882. Certificate number 1882-82-10-W2. This is another new name for me. I suspect his parents were Theodore Scott Wonderland and Sarah Ellis Matlack, my great grandparents, who lived in Moorestown, Chester Township.

This is the website for the New Jersey Archives.

http://www.njarchives.org/links/databases.html

Click on Searchable Database to find the marriage and death indexes.
I didn't realize John and Susan had another son William until now. I just did a quick search and found them in Evesham, Burlington county (1860) but the name in the census is Wonderland instead of Wonderlin. Thanks for the tip off. I will let you know if I find anything else. Although it is strange that William does not appear in the 1850 Census with the rest of the family when he would have been 11. I wonder if there are other siblings I am missing. So far I just have George, Charles and now William with Charles being a bit younger than George and William.

Steve

John (b. 1818) And Andrew Wonderlin (b. 1817) in NJ

In reviewing some census records, I have come across a John Wonderlin b. 1818 in NJ and an Andrew Wonderlin b 1817 in NJ and was wondering if they might be related (perhaps brothers). John has lived in New Hanover, Burlington (1840), Evesham (1850), Burlington City, (1870) and Bordentown (1880). His wife is Susan (b. 1813) and there are at least two children - George (1841) and Charles (1854).
Andrew lived in New Castle De in 1850 and Westampton, Burlco, NJ in 1860 with his wife Elizabeth A. (1822) and children Mary Anna (1843 in NJ), Hannah A. (1845 in NJ), Heather (1850 in De) and Elizabeth (1857 in DE).
I can't seem to find any other info that goes back earlier to either connect the two or give info on who their parents might be.
I am descended from John, his son George, his daughter Mary C. Wonderlin (1872-1921) who married Joseph Haines Rockhill.
I hpe someone is able to help make the connection (if there truly is one). I have some other info on the descendants of John and a little bit on Andrew's for those interested.

I am in northern NY. My father and grandfather got me doing the family research. It is great fun but time consuming. I have been to Oddfellow Cemetery but that was early on in my research so I was unaware that there were Wonderlin's buried there ( I was looking for Rockhills). I hope to pay another visit, hopefully within the next year. I am hoping to get a list of names of those buried there for info. I can let you know what I find.

I don't have that name but I do remember my husband talking about Dorn- did they live in German Village in Columbus? The Paul I have was married to Veronica Ressa. No children. Aunt Veronica is still alive. Uncle Paul just died last year. John Basil W. married Lillie Plank. There is still a Plank's Sausage House or Beer Hall or something in German Village. Their children were John, Paul Bob and Mary Louise. The Plank family put out a hard bound family history anecdotal story book. Not too many Wunderlins mentioned. Mary Louise W. Leister (my mother in law) claims not to remember anything. She is past 80 and live in Gahann OH with her 2nd son. Good luck in your search Doris472@aol.com

Their children were Robert, Louise, John Basil, Reinhard, Mina and Olivia. I have nothing on the Thurig name but children. Reinhard was deaf and dumb and Mina & Olivia & Reinhard all lived together in the house they were born in (in German Village which is just south of downtown Columbus OH) and never married. John Basil married Lillie Plank who is my husband's mother's mother. Sorry I don't have more Doris472@aol.c0m

Hi Matt!

My Great Great Grandfather Ignatius Wunderlin came from the Zienengen, Switzerland area in the early 1800's. His decendants are located in Southwestern Wisconsin near Potosi and Platteville where most still live today.

Actually the Wunderlin name is rare in the United States but there are a few concentrations of them around in specific locations in the United States.

Jim

Hi, I'm Swiss, wondering about my roots. As far as I read
there are even more Wunderlins in the States than in Switerland.
Anyway, Wunderlin is a Swiss name as far as I know,
though, there are quite similar german names.
for me it's the same than the ones who have left
Switzerland hundreds years ago, I just move to England.

Matt

I don't know if this will help you, but I work with a Brian Wonderlin. He lives in Haddonfield NJ. His family is from around the area. I know his parents are alive and he has a brother, not sure about other siblings. He is in his mid 40's.

Sheril

Thanks for your information. I still have to prove that my great great grandfather, James Wonderland, was born in New Jersey and the brother of John Wonderlin. I don't know if such records exsist but I hope to try to find them.

Curt
Sherilena

I would like to know if you have any more information on John Wonderlin of Burlington.

My mothers maiden name is Wonderland, usually pronounced Wonderlin. Her great-grandfather was James Wonderland, born about 1817. While I have only found records of Peter, he supposedly had other son's named James, John, and George.

In searching census and other records in Pa. and N. J. I find James, John, Peter, and George Wonderlin's and Wonderland's. In some cases both spellings refer to the same person.

The 1830 census records a Peter Wonderland living in Waterford Township, Gloucester Co., N. J. He had two sons. The older was the right age to be your John. The younger was the right age to be my James.

I have found a James Wonderland, born in N. J., in the 1850 and 1870 Pa census. My James married Leanora Edmunds in Harrison Co, West Virginia, in 1853.

The John Wonderlin living in Burlington, N. J., in the 1850 census was also born in N. J.

I have not been able to prove all of these connections but I find the number of coincidences interesting.

Curt Miller
Hi!

Our Ignatius Wunderlin (my great great grandfather) came over from Switzerland about 1828 and settled initially in Pennsylvania. He moved his family to Potosi, Wisconsin in 1845 and started farming. There are many of his decendents living in Southwestern Wisconsin today and the old family farm is still owned by the Wunderlin decendents.

Two of my brothers an my niece traveled to Switzerland in April this year to search out the old Ignatius's home. We believe we found the place, Zeiningen, Switzerland. We met several Wunderlin families there and think we found the original Wunderlin House of my G G Grandfather.

Zeiningen is a small town in North central Switzerland near the Rhine River. We were told that the Wunderlin name probably came out of the Black Forest area in about 1200 AD.
Zeiningen has about 40 Wunderlin families listed in the phone book.

We met a wonderful couple Gerhard and Andrea Wunderlin who run the Wunderlin winery in Zeiningen. We did alot of wine tasting and visited their vineyards on the hillside surrounding the town. We also met a former city council chairman, Maynard Hohler whose mother was a Wunderlin. He is the town historian and will have our visit in a story in the Zeiningen yearly magazine.

Take care,
Jim
