George Wraight born1839 Burham [Medway Area of Kent England]

I have been hunting for George, the son of William Wraight and Hariett Gadd. His wife was Ellen Pavis [Parris?] born c1849 in Wood Mene Cambridgeshire and they married in 1866 in Halling, Kent. From that point however, they seem to have vanished.

His elder half brother William Gadd and his wife Charlotte Pavis [Parris?] emigrated to America in 1872 and I have been wondering if he had been following his brother George.

This is based on a finding of a George Wraight born c 1841 arriving on the ship Calabria on 6/6/1870. Is anyone able to tell me if it was the same George as my one?

Many thanks in anticipation

Berry

Hi Joan

I have a hugh amount on the Wraight connection, although David Gadd who is in the US and may be already known to you has a lot more on the Gadd side, but on the Pavis side I have very little. Charlotte married William Gadd [born 1836] the Son of Harriet Gadd [Baptised Gad 1817] who was married in 1838 to William Wraight [baptised Wrate in 1818].

If you send me an e-mail - berry.wraight@gmail.com - then I can send you a spreadsheet with the relevant info.

Cheers

Berry

I am a great grandson of Charlotte Pavis and William Gadd. My grandfather was J. Orten Gadd, and my father Wesley Pavis Gadd.

Hi Wesley,
Thanks for your message.

George is a loose end on my tree and a very minor irritation in that I am unable to "kill him off" so to speak.

If you reply to Joan, who I note has replied to your message also, she may be willing to give you information on your Pavis lineage as the Wraights are probably not strictly part of your ancestry. Charlotte's father William was born to Harriet Gadd who then married William Wraight a year or so later, so is probably William's stepfather rather than Father.

Happy hunting
Berry

Hi Berry,
Will fill him in on what we have. Also the pictures from the cemetery. Funny how I grew up with the Gadds AND NEVER KNEW THE CONNECTION. So, we have another cousin in our midst!
Love you, Joan

Thank you, Barry!
Now this begs the question, what became of Harriot Gadd's first husband? And I wonder what her maiden name was?

Well I don't think she had one to be honest. I think I found his baptism and it just showed her and not a father. Unfortunaely I can't check on the CityArk site as Aylesford is not in its patch but familysearch.org shows a transcription and that has only Harriet Gadd listed as parent. However, realised William and Harriet were married in Burham so have just been able to look at the marriage record which shows Harriet as a spinster.

If you would like to look at the image yourself, it is image 204 in the Burham Register of Marriages section for 1837 - 1882.

If you are not already familiar with the CityArk site it is a must for anyone with ancestors in the Medway area. Well worth exploring and completely free!!!

I have always thought that it might have been the reason for the emigration to America because up until his marriage to Charlotte, he had always been listed as Wraight. I have often wondered if it was a shock to him that William Wraight was not his father, or if he was his father, that he was born out of wedlock. Not sure how you would be able to find out as I doubt there are any relevant records with such views.

Take care

Berry
