Well I don't think she had one to be honest. I think I found his baptism and it just showed her and not a father. Unfortunaely I can't check on the CityArk site as Aylesford is not in its patch but familysearch.org shows a transcription and that has only Harriet Gadd listed as parent. However, realised William and Harriet were married in Burham so have just been able to look at the marriage record which shows Harriet as a spinster.

If you would like to look at the image yourself, it is image 204 in the Burham Register of Marriages section for 1837 - 1882.

If you are not already familiar with the CityArk site it is a must for anyone with ancestors in the Medway area. Well worth exploring and completely free!!!

I have always thought that it might have been the reason for the emigration to America because up until his marriage to Charlotte, he had always been listed as Wraight. I have often wondered if it was a shock to him that William Wraight was not his father, or if he was his father, that he was born out of wedlock. Not sure how you would be able to find out as I doubt there are any relevant records with such views.

Take care

Berry

Just to get this straight-------Charlotte was the daughter of Thomas Pavis and Mary Tilley Pavis. Charlotte married William Gadd. Remember, Ellen also married a Gadd--George Wraight, Williams brother.. Two sisters marrying two brothers!

Harriet gave birth to William and when she marries William Wraight she gave William that name. Why he changed it back to Gadd we may never know. When William and Charlotte Pavis Gadd came to Connecticut it was with the name Gadd. Ellen .her sister, had the name Wraight. And that si a real story!

Berry, we are once again into this and it is fun if not frustrating!
Love you, Joan

I agree it may have been a shock to find he was really a Gadd by birth but probably a Wraight and just not listed as such. She was not married then so it would have been in keeping not to list the father. Then they married and she gave him the name Wraight. He WAS named William---after his father??? Sounds right.
As to coming to Connecticut---Charlotte's family (Thomas Pavis and Mary Tilley Pavis all-but Thomas and Julia who went on to Australia first--came to
Connecticut at that time and all settled in the New Haven area.
Still giving us things to think about!

Love, Joan

I doubt that William had much choice in the matter. At that time you could only use the name put on the baptismal record as far as I know, unless your name had been legally changed through adoption, but I doubt there was sufficient money to do that.

I think it was quite normal for a child to take the name of the man their mother marries, regardless whether they were born in or out of wedlock previously. Of course it could be that William had always known that William Wraight was not his father and used the name Gadd consistently but if the enumerator completed the census forms, I doubt he took anything other than their first names, therefore leaving us with all sorts of misinformation.

George was definitely a Wraight as William and Harriet were married, so William and George were probably half brothers, therefore Ellen married a half Gadd:-)

It is quite likely that George and Ellen met at William and Harriet's wedding. At that time it would have been one of the best places to have met people outside the village. I have always looked at the families of the bride and groom with great interest as I have found several missing links as a result of doing so.

One day I might find it what happened to George, I know we look at the possibility of him being in Australia and America but not found any hard and fast evidence. It's just a thought, but have you found a date for Eleen arriving in the USA?
