Woodrows at the Mansfield and Upper Springfield MM of Friends

I have my Woodrow lineage as far as Benjamin Woodrow who married Sarah Horner in 1816, at Upper Springfield N.J. MM - but I have no proof. She was marrying outside the Friends and had to send letters asking to be forgiven and accepted back in. They did accept her, but not much was said about Benjamin, or where exactly they married. They were both from Mansfield, NJ, and the Horner family was well established there. I know that Sarah and her sister Acsah got a certificate from the Mansfield MM to travel to Upper Springfield at the date the marriage took place.
Benjamin was quoted later in life as saying he was from Pennsylvania, and since he was born in 1790, that would mean he was a member of one of the four families there at the time. Unfortunately, the early census did not name anyone other than head of household, so I have to find a different avenue for finding him.
One of my brothers thought that Benjamin's father was William, but William and his wife died before Benjamin was born. So that leaves three families in Pennsylvania at the right time.
So I am looking for records of Benjamin and Sarah's marriage, and of Benjamin's family of origin in Pennsylvania.

Re: Woodrow Surname

I've been working on my husband's family tree and there are so many names that are the same that I think I may have the tree a bit messed up. My father in law is Clyde William Woodrow dob 1937, his father was Charles H Woodrow 1908-1973, his dad was John H. Woodrow b. 1877, his dad was Joseph H. Woodrow 1853-1910, his dad is William G. Woodrow 1817-1883, his dad was William Woodrow 1782-1848, his dad was Joseph Woodrow 1738-1776 and his dad was Isaac Woodrow 1705-1758, and his dad was Simeon Woodrow 1675-1750 and his dad was James Rev Wodrow 1637-1707 whose dad was Robert Wodrow 1600-1672, whose dad was John Woodrow 1570-1661 whose dad was Rev Patrick Wodrow 1540-1572 who was married to Agnes Hamilton 1543-1573 who was related to James A Hamilton 1523-1575 and his dad was Sir James 1st Earl of Arran Hamilton Sr 1480-1529. I'm really new to this and I'm hoping I have his tree mostly correct but some names almost look like they could link his family to President Woodrow Wilson? The Robert Wodrow that I have in the tree from 1600 to 1672 was married to Agnes Dulop 1610-1653 and it looks like they had a daughter Agnes, born 1637. I see a Thomas Woodrow in the tree, dob 1896 and was the son of Joseph H. Woodrow dob 1853-1910. There is also a Thomas Woodrow in the tree dob 1777, son of Joseph Woodrow 1738-1776 and his wife was Jemima Leeds 1743-1785. I would love to be able to connect his tree to President Woodrow Wilson, but I'm just not sure if they are related or not. Please let me know if you think there is a connection. I just don't seem to be able to link them up. Thanks.

Rachel,
Yes, our N.Ireland immigrants were originally from Scotland (or at least, from there prior to coming to N. Ireland) and were part of the early wave of Scots Irish who came to America in the early 1700s.

Hi Robin
DNA testing in definately something I want to do for both myself and my hubby (the woodrow) as far as I can see Johns family came to Islay in the 1600's from Paisley and were mainly ministers of religion
Im not sure where the irish side comes in but I would not be surprised to find a link with them somewhere

Rachel

Ian,
yDNA testing for my brother, a Withrow, has us sharing a common ancestor with several descendants of these Wodrows. I sure would love to figure out how we tie in, but our earliest record is for Robert Withrow b. 1692, and his wife, Jennet, who immigrated to America, probably PA, from Northern Ireland. I am afraid there are probably no surviving records prior to that.

His first son was Joseph Gill Woodrow, born 1879 in Dutchess County, Pennsylvania.
I am trying to track down John Woodrow's parents' names and place of birth.

His parents were Duncan Withrow and Elizabeth Campbell. Neil Woodrow and Helen Crawford had 1 child (Helen born 30 June 1858) named Wodrow and the rest were named Woodrow.

My gg granfather's sister had a son named John Woodrew.

So as you pointed out there didn't seem to be any consistency in the way the name was spelt.

Regards
Iain

I am also descended from the Woodrows on Isle of Islay, and have only recently discovered my father's ancestors. It has opened up a whole new window of opportunity to connect with people, that my father may not have even known very much about.

I am also in Australia. My great grandfather was Alexander Woodrow, and i have some stumbling blocks in regard to his history. He was born 1876 son of James and Isabella McInnes. He was a coachbuilder on the Island. Any help with Alexander would be appreciated.

Hello Rachel,

Thanks for your reply. I think James Woodrow (Wodrow) came from Paisley, Glasgow area but I cannot prove that yet (I am still looking). Incidentally I read somewhere that all the Woodrows in Scotland were descended from a wood reeve (the steward or overseer of a wood) who lived in Dunfermline in the 14th Century, so you and I are probably related in some way and so was the rev.

Regards
Iain

It seems our branch of the family lost connections at Ernest moved the family around the northeast.
Do you have any further information on Josephine's ancestors? I have found it impossible to get beyond John & Sarah Burns Woodrow. Josephine would be my great-great grandmother (Josephine>Ernest A.> Richard H.>Alan R.> Richard A. LaBelle)

Thanks.

in the census records in scotland i have found that the name woodrow changes in spelling - probably because those doing the census did not know who to spell it and made it up as they went along
I have the same family member having there name spelt both ways due to different census recorders
:)

I am sorry to say I have checked my information and have done more digging and can't find anything on the Susanna Herman. All I have is her name listed on Ira's death certificate. I know there is a lineage out there that has information on all 14 or so siblings of Elihu. Whether it contains any information on Susanna, I don't know. The author is Charles E. Boetsch, but I have been unable to contact him through any of his posts. I would love to get a copy of the Gill Woodrow line.
If I find anything I will pass it along.

Cindy

Re: Woodrow Surname-Correction

I wanted to correct the Woodrow lineage of President Woodrow Wilson that I posted in 2009. Ongoing research has revealed the John Wodrow of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland who married Jean Sclater on 12 January 1751 WAS NOT the son of Dr. John Wodrow and Sofia Douglas of Glasgow. Although this has been a long accepted lineage among descendants of President Wilson's family, they were mistaken. It turns out that the son of Dr. John and Sophia (Douglas) Wodrow who was thought to be John of Paisley was actually named James. Therefore the lineage I posted is incorrect in the first through the third generations. I apologize for the confusion. This just goes to show that it is always best to do research in primary sources, and not accept long believed published information that has been repeated many times over.

I have a Alfred John Woodrow and a James Woodrow, emigrating from Askam in Furness, out of Liverpool April 17, 1908 arriving in New York, they headed out to Butte Montana to work in the mines. Alfred John was also a boxer/fighter. He may have killed someone in Butte and escaped to Canada to then return to England. Alfred's son Harry emigrated to Canada in 1923 or so, in the western part, left Canada and then settled down in Schenectady, New York in 1924.

While in Canda they had several children. I found him in Canada Census 1852 and his name was Mathias Woodrow. New York Census it was Mathew Woodrough and cemetery lists his as Matthew Woodroe.

I am searching for the family of my Great Grandfather. He & his brother were born at Ryde, Isle of Wight and were adopted into the Woodrow family, so I don't know the brothers' birth surname. (whether it was Woodrow or another family). I also can't trace which branch of the IOW Woodrow's adopted the brothers. By 1891 James Henry was in London working in a brewery and married to my Great Grandmother Eliza (nee Barnett). His brother (possibly named Harry or George)was also in London working in a hotel. Do any IOW Woodrow's have a distant memory of these brothers being adopted into their family while young, but then going to London in their early 20's??

My ggg grandmother was Margaret Woodrow, daughter of John Woodrow,"a farmer of Puritan descent." They lived in Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania. One of Robert Wodrow's sons came to Pennsylvania. Would he have been the father of my John Woodrow?

Thanks for any help,

Gay

Hi there. I'm Ellen Woodrow, and my grandfather was a brother of Stella. Their parents were Johnny Robinson Woodrow (B. 7 May 1845, Indiana) and Mary Elizabeth Hine (b. 15 Jul 1859, Nebraska). I have pictures, though my copies are not vey clear. My aunt Irene Stewart has the originals, I believe. I'll send more information later - I have more I just have to dig it out.
