This is a pure stab in total darkness, my ancester Agnes woodna [Surname IGI ] gave birth to walter Haig 1738 Canonbie,Dumfries,Scotland. I believe her name to be Woodhall. She was married to john Haig [ born abt 1714] somewhere in Scotland. I know this is very sketchy but any help,ideas - would be most helpful. Please contact me as soon as possible thanks in advance.

My family have a story about an ancestor George Frederic Parmenter working at Lowther Castle - not sure when but it may have been in the 1880s (he died late 1890s) when he was living in the Carlisle area. Not sure what he worked there as - he was previously a train guard, postal office employee and a tobacconist! Does anyone know how you would research this? Am sure the Lowther Castle employment books aren't available to view.

Neither have I found her on the 1901 census. Found a girl with the same name born in 1900, but can't be certain it's her.

Am a member of the Oldbury E-List and posted a message this evening, hoping someone will be able to trace why she was left in an orphanage and in which orphanage and why she was sent to Canada.

My grandmother's name was May Woodhall. According to her birth certificate, she was born 18 May 1900 at 87 Park Lane, Oldbury; parents John Woodhall and Elizabeth Woodhall formerly Price. She never remembered much of her early years, but said she was left at a "orphanage" at about 3 years old. She never talked about her life in England. She was sent to Canada June 1910 as a Home Child. She was adopted by John Wallace and Frances Taylor in Kingsbury, Quebec. She always considered them her parents, and my Dad knew them as his grandparents. Grandma died in march 1987 of Alzheimers disease. The Wallaces considered her birthday on 1 May, and Dad didn't know different until she sent for her birth certificate for her pension at age 65. That's when she said her birthday was really 18 May. When she started getting sick, she destroyed a lot of papers and pictures, including her birth certicate. I sent for a copy of her birth certificate last year, and the dates match. Dad and I have always been curious about her biological family, and I promised him I would see what I could find out.
As for her siblings, all I have I found out from census records between 1881 and 1901. I still haven't found May on the 1901 census.

1 John Woodhall was born in 1854 or 1855 Rowley Regis, Stafford, possibly the son of John Woodhall and Hannah Turley (not certain). John died before/around 1901 in Oldbury, Worcestershire, at the age of about 47 years. John married, at the age of 23 years, in 1877 in West Bromwich, Christ Church to Elizabeth Price, aged 18 years. Elizabeth was born in 1859 in Oldbury, Worcs, daughter of Jonathan Price and Hannah Price (nee Hodgkiss).

Children of John and Elizabeth :
1 John Henry Woodall, born in 1878 in Oldbury, Worcs.
2 Ann Maria Woodall, born in 1880 in Oldbury, Worcs.
3 Hannah Woodall, born in 1885 in Oldbury, Worcs.

What's your grandmother's name, I would really like to know.
As you can see my info stops at the birth of Thomas in 1899. I will have a look into the 1901 census if I can asap, but have to work this weekend.

As far as I have been able to make out John Woodhall, b. 1854/5 died around 1901 - could this be the reason your grandmother was left in an orphanage? I don't know, I definitely must look into the 1901 census and see what happened to the other siblings.

Susannah Woodhall b. 1894 is my grandmother, so your grandmother's sister.

My father b 1912[ william joseph was married to Doreen {Craddock]b 1920 in 1942
Siblings were,Ian, Suzanne,Philip,Kenny,Billy,Johnny,David,Alf and Doreen.
My fathers dad[my G/father} was David Woodhall[ believe was born 1883/5}, dont know his wifes name.He served in WW1 in the Kings 20th Hussars [ see pic] died in mid 1960's
He had sons, Ron,Alf, William & daughter Eedie{ Edith?}who married John Speight.
All were born in the Black Country[ Dudley/Coseley/wolverhampon

I am searching for any information on John Woodhall/Woodall born 1855 Rowley Regis. He married Elizabeth Price 3 December 1877 in Oldbury. My grandmother was born to them in May 1900 (they are listed as her parents on her birth certificate) but was not living with Elizabeth in 1901. My grandmother was left in an orphanage abour 1903. She was sent to Canada in 1910 as a Home Child. I have no info on John. I have found Elizabeth Price on the census for 1861 and 1871 parents were Johnathan Price and Hannah. They lived in Oldbury (or area) all their lives. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe I have traced my g-grandfather to Dudley, born in 1864. I may have more information in a week or two. My g-grandfather's name was Joseph N. Woodall, and his fathers name may have been William Woodall and mother named Sofia (Stringer) Woodall. How far back can you go in England?

I am researching my Woodall roots which may possibly be in the Dudley area. I hope to find out in the next week or two if my g-grandfather was born in Dudley near Birmingham. He emigrated to America in 1887, and his death certificate states he was born in New Castle England, but doesn't say which New Castle ( I live in the US, apparently there are several in New Castles in England). I used the familytreedna.com service I found a distant relative in south England, and we may have found one of my third-cousins (our g-grandfathers may have been brothers). His last name is Woodhall due to a clerical error two generations ago. There is a Woodall/Woodhall project on the dna website, I encourage you to check it out. Best Wishes!

He was transorted to Van Diemens Land now Tasmania Australia) as a convict the naughty boy for theft in 1835 aboard the Aurora 1 and married Amelia Hedsman. My Woodhalls are from the Cumberland England area, not so far from Dumfries, however I've not found any of them coming from Scotland as yet.

Interestingly your name is Patterson? I have several Patterson's in my tree from Dumfries, tracing back to William Patterson, the founder of the bank of England and Scotland.

Thanks for your reply. Spooky but I was born in Wavertree and moved to Southport when I was 5 I lived there for 20 years and my mum & brother are still there. I think our ancestors are probably related as the spelling of McKinneley is rare. I have a John McKinneley (1885) in my family tree who was my grandmothers uncle, born to Anne McKinneley nee Woodhall and James McKinneley originally from Belfast, who was a ships cook. I am trying to find out more information about my great grandmother Florence Woodhall. She was born in 1888 in Lincoln and married Henry Turner in 1907. On her marriage certificate it lists her father as John Woodhall (deceased) but on her birth certificate its says his name is William Woodhall. I can't work out which one is correct. Other information I have is that her mothers name was Hannah and she had a brother called Herbert (I found this on the 1891 & 1901 census, neither has her father living with the family). Thanks for your intrest but alas and sadly this is not my relative. On old doucuments she is listed as Agnes
Woodna, I don't believe that this is her real name. I came
up with the Woodhall name by putting a line on the n to make
h, and the two ll's on the end were the scribble on the original doucument which I have examanied. It wasn't meant to be easy was it? again thanks so much for your intrest in this matter.

John Haig And Agnes Woodna [belived to be woodhall] son walter; settled in Wigton Cumberland. He was a stone mason, eventualy moved to Sandwith,Cumberland.
The Pattersons are from Duns,Berwickshire - setling in Consett,Durham - in the 1830s.
I can expand on both trees if of intrest.

I have several Sarah Woodhalls from Staffordshire.
One was born in 1834, daughter of Peter Woodhall and Hannah Huxley. She may have been born a bit to early, but thought I'd toss it to you just in case. I don't know who she married.
The other Sarahs were born too late to be yours.

My GGgrandmother's name was Ann Woodhall, born in England about 1840 or so. She married Henry Smith.
My Ggrandfather, John Ewert Smith, was born 12/27/1862 and Christened at West Bromwich,Stafford. He and his younger sister,Mary Ann (b.1866) came to America about 1885.
I would like to know anything about Ann and Henry. Any clues would be appreciated.

I have a John Woodhall (changed from Woodall in 1881 when he came to America. He was born 26 Feb. 1844 or 45)in Dudley to Thomas & Sarah Woodall. John's wife was Mary Ann Mills and they had several children who also came to America. I am interested in finding the names of John's sisters and brothers. I think I have identified his parents in the 1841 census but since I don't know for sure his sisters and brothers I cant be sure.

In 1872 Nora Ellen Hill was married to John redwine in Travis county, TX ...she was a civil war orphan from GA... the Woodhall/Woodall family lived in Austin, and some of the redwine's remember going to visit them in the early 1920s and they called them either grandparents or aunt... I know nothing else about the family. If anyone knows of a Woodhall/ Woodall (or similar pronounced surname) in the Austin Tx area from after the civil war through the 1920s please contact me so I can try to figure out this mystery. thank you

Looking for any information on the Woodhalls of Malpas Near Chesire. In particular John Woodhall who was convicted of theft and sent to Tasmania per the convict barque George III that had two disasterous incidents on route. First one a fire on board near the gunpowder and the other in the Channell outside Hobart where the ship hit rocks now known as Georges Rocks where he became a survivor and went on to marry Amelia Hedsman. I would like to link him back to his parents in the UK.

My gt.gt. Grandmother was Ann Woodhall who married James McKinneley in Liverpool around 1865. They had a few children( that I know of) Margaret, Annie, William, Emily, James and my Gt Gt Grandmother Elizabet Alice. Elizabeth married David Marshall in 1889 in Toxteth Any help as to Ann's origins would be of help

I guess we are distant cousins as I too am descended from the Melmerby Woodhall clan. William Woodhall and Hannah Bromwell's son William Woodhall b. 1848 married Harriet Dobson( a servant girl in his widowed sisters INN) and they came to Canada and that is where my Grandfather John Woodhall was born in 1882( His brother Ambrose was born 1885 in Canada before the family moved to Sault St. Marie Michigan. Would love to share information and look forward to hearing from you.

I have an Ann Woodhall born 13 March 1842 in England, daughter of William Woodhall and Hannah Bromwell. Don't know if this is your Ann or not. William was born in Melmerby, Cumberland, England. I am Descended through Ann's brother William Woodhall b 1848 and married to Harriet Dobson. Hope this helps some.

I'm replying to a message posted four years ago by Shirley Lancaster, saying she had information on Peel County Woodhalls. I had a great-great aunt, Elizabeth Mitchell, who married an Ambrose Woodhall on 13 July 1863. They both lived in Chinguacousy (I believe their township was Cheltenham), Peel County, and they were married at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Guelph, Ontario. According to the marriage record, the parents of Ambrose were John Woodhall and Ann Tisdale; parents of Elizabeth (Eliza) were Samuel Mitchell and Helen (or Ellen) Crawford. Ambrose was 29 years old and Eliza was 23. If anyone has information on these Woodhalls or Mitchells, please let me know. Jerry (short for Marjorie) Scott

I have recently begun researching Woodhall's from the Birmingham area although I haven't been able to find much information on them yet.

There is a William in my tree but he wasn't born until 1872 and he married Rose Ellen Woodhall (nee Woodhall!! - think they were cousins). Rose's parents were Edward and Mary Ann and Edward's parents were Alfred and Isabella.

I was just wondering if you had come across any of these names before as it would be great to find more details on this side of our family. I will let you know if I come across any information on your William too.

My husband's grandmother was Harriett Dobson, she lived with her daughter Dorothy and family. My mother-in-law Dorothy,told me that her mother Harriett and father William both worked at Lowther Castle near Penrith, Cumbria, UK. They met there, she was 15 and a scullery maid, he was 10-15 years older, and a carpenter. Having been to what's left of the castle, I would say it was the countryhome of the Earl of Lonsdale. They did emigrate to Canada and then the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. USA

Are John (Jack) and Arthur the same person as you indicate their birth dates to be 1867. Do you know the names of the parents? My grandmother was Jane Woodhall, whose family came from Melmerby in the Penrith area and who had an uncle named Ambrose.
