This is most likely a picture taken during WWII. Is there a date and location where picture was taken? He appears to be wearing the shoulder board of a commodore of the U.S. Merchant Marines? Fabulous and historical photo that must be shared by all your relations. There are many untold stories yet to be found and I wish to be included in your genealogy group that provides what details we can to build a story that captures the high seas and battles of the Pacific. Thank you for sharing! Looking forward to more updates, too!

My great-grandfather Clarence Arthur Harrison was the chief engineer aboard S.S. JANE ADDAMS; the very same vessel your great-grandfather was master of the ship. They both went through the same ordeals in getting this ship built, assigned a new crew and finally outfitted before it went to San Francisco for loading of wartime cargo and mail for the South Pacific in late 1942. Any details you have about the JANE ADDAMS and what your great-grandfather did that you recall or have information about would be greatly appreciated. I want this for my genealogy collection of my HARRISON family. Thank you!

Stephen, during WWII my father was transported from San Francisco to New Caledonia aboard the SS Jane Addams in June '44. Would you happen to have a photo of the Jane Addams? And, know if the ship's log or diary exists?
Thanks,
Paul Bartley

Herman Frederick was born 12 March 1841 in Holstein, Germany and came to the US in 1861. He and Amelia were married in Davenport, IA, in 1874.
Son - John Claus was born in Davenport on 23 July 1875 (my adopted grandfather)
son - Frederick Wilhelm was born 30 Sept 1876 in Scott County, IA
daughter - Elvina b. 27 Sept 1878 d. 1 Aug 1879
daughter - Anna born 11 July 1880 in Carroll County, IA
daughter - Elsie born 11 Oct 1885 in Carroll County, IA
Herman d. 11 Nov. 1912
Amelia (Mollie) d. 28 Feb. 1938
Both are buried in the City Cemetery, Carroll, IA
Have found nothing on Herman's parentage or anything prior to his arrival in US. I discovered that the 10 referred to in my first posting referred to his wife's family' arrival. Herman is a complete mystery. Don't know if he came over alone or with friends or relatives.
