We had heard my grandfather's family came through Pennsylvania but no more information then that. His father was Alex(Alec) Wlas and mother was Katherine Novak. Maybe Anna had brothers or cousins that we are related to. Have you done the DNA at all? Haven't seen anyone related on my mother's side show up yet (polish/Ukrainian side).

Have you tried locating the ancestor's Philadelphia arrival manifest? There would be his place of birth.
Your grandfather come to America single or married?

OK, Major breakthrough. Grandfather Wojćiech Wlaż naturalization papers say:

Married and lived with grandmother Anna (Kukielka) in Luchów Górny, Poland. This is only 5 miles away from where grandmother Katarzyńa (Kyć) Petrowski was born and raised. They had to have know eachother. I mean that's walking distance here in my neck of the woods. They also lived only a few blocks away from eachother in Philadelphia in the neighborhood I was born and raised in. There is a great mystery. I never met grandparents Wojćiech or Anna. My father married their daughter for crying out loud. I do know that all of the Wlaż family moved to various places in Southern New Jersey early on and we often visited them there. The ship manifest for Anna has her place just over the Polish border in the Ukraine. It is a place called Karow, (Galicia) Ukraine. This is a huge leap forward for me. Anyone interested in the naturalization record please contact me. The record also states that Uncle Andrew Wlaż was born in Poland and came here with Wojćiech.

Your email account bounced me.

It appears that myself and another chap with Ukrainian background are going to be deemed a new subclade in YFull haplotree. Very exciting. I should know in a week or so. It should be I2a1b2a1a2c S17250 Y4882 Y105 subclade. His ancestry is from the Poland/Ukraine border. Most of my BigY matches are from S. Poland, NW. Ukraine. One from Slovakia and one from Russian Federation. Dinaric North with strong East/Northeast European genetics.

I just got back from DC on business and visiting with my two cousins (they are snow birds with houses up north and in Florida). I have not seen them in 50+ years. My cousin Mark handed me a large file of information on the Wlaz side of the family. I mean a really amazing amount of history, pictures, papers and documents. I even have a series of letters from Southern Poland and Posnon during the Soviet era. Surely a treasure trove and very very enlightening. Official documents of all kinds have Wojciech Wlaś surname spelled Wlaś, Wlaz, Wlas, Ulos, Welsh etc. Also his first name is spelled in many different ways. A lot of good leads and documents with the old addresses on them. I am copying them digitally starting today. I am learning so much!
