I am searching for more information on my great-great-grandfather, Joseph Wittman. According to information in the 1920 census, he was living in Sharpsburg, Pa., immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1861, was naturalized in 1880. He married Elizabeth Prager and their children were Cecile, Flora, Dorothy, Joseph, Rudolph, Girard, Christine, Francis, Leo, Marian. My grandmother remembers that he ran a grocery store; the 1920 census has his occupation as school janitor. My grandmother also said there was supposed to be a title in his background.

I've hit the brick wall on my grgrandmother. Her name was Crescentia, also known as Grace. I've found various spellings for the last name - no surprise there. She was born 1846-47 and married Joseph Hammes in MI 1868. So emigration from Wurttemberg would have been between those dates.

I know am quite sure she had a sister named Francezka (choose your spelling). She married Anton Perrong (peron Perron...)

They both finally settled with families and died in Calumet, MI.

Don't know if we are related or not, but thought I'd reply to your posting as I too am related to the family Wittman in Wisconsin. My GGrandfathers name was Conrad Wittman. He was born May 18th, 1876 in Jefferson County, then moved to the Wood County area where he married a Lena Grossman (1899). She died leaving behind her husband and 2 daughters. Conrad then married Della Pearl (1909) and had 2 more daughters and 4 sons in their union of marriage. If these WITTMANs sound familar to anyone ... do let me know!

I am in the process of researching my family roots.
My great great grandparents were Michael
Bernhard Wittman and Rosella Reidel. I have
no birthdate or marriage date. It is unknown
if they were married in the US or in Baveria.
They had the following children whom were born
in Sheboygan Wisconsin: William (died young, wife Abby, daughter
Irene), Mary, Carrie, Annie, Bernhard "Barney" (my
great grandpa), DOB 12-2-1872, and Rose. My
great grandpa, "Barney" married Maria "Lizzy" Beckers
(place unknown) on 1-21-1895.

I hope I am able to link up to somebody who
may have more info on this.
I am stumped. I discovered some old books in my Grandparents attic. One of the books is titled "The Human Body and It's Health".
Inside the front cover is the name of Gracie Wittman and the date of March 23, 1892. The book's copyright is 1884. It has the stamp of Mill's Pexton, DRUGGISTS, and booksellers of Harlan Iowa on the cover.

I have no indication in my genealogy to any relation to a Gracie Wittman or relatives in Iowa or any relative in the healthcare field.

Does anyone identify with this relative?

Thanks in advance!

From the Mobile, Alabama Newspaper

Monday, March 22, 1909

"As the result of the fall from a window of a Dauphin streetcar Sunday morning to the asphalt pavement at Lemoyne Place and Dauphin Way, the little 4-year-old son of Charles Wittman is suffering from severe bruises about the head and face, and it is considered remarkable the child was not fatally hurt. The child was standing on a seat looking from the car window when he lost his balance and fell headlong to the pavement. The car was brought to a quick stop and the child picked up. Dr. Glass happened along in an automobile and examined the child, finding that it was but slightly hurt. The child was taken home and medical attention given. The car was in charge of Conductor Sullivan and Motor man Noel ."

Not my line, just sharing.

Re: Wittman from Russia

Hello,
My name is Shawn Wittman. I have my mothers last name because my mother and father were never married. Now my grandmother was born in Germany and grew up there. As a teenager (12-16)she lived in Germany during World War2. she met Reuben Wittman who was in the American Army in 1946 when she was 17. He told her that his grand parents came to America from Russia. He married my grand mother in Germany so she could come to America. But after she got here, he never saw her again. She tried to find him, but couldn't. So Reuben Wittman's daughter,(my mother) is Delores Wittman. I wonder if we could be related. When we all tried to look for him, it looked like he lived in Kansas for a while, and in Denver Colorado for a while. After he left the Army they think they found him driving trucks for a living, but they're not sure if that's was him, or a different man named Wittman.

Update: Wittman(n) Sheboygan WI to ND

I posted a message earlier regarding what I knew about my Wittman(n) roots. I have more information.

My Great Great grandfathers name was actually Peter (not Michael Bernhard) Wittmann. I have confirmed this via the tombstone and 1885 census records. Peter and Rosalia (how her name is spelled on the tombstone) died in Wahpeton ND on 2-2-1908 due to carbon monoxide poisening from their coal furnace. Peter's DOB: 4-25-1832. Rosalia's DOB: 1-22-1836.

They moved from Sheboygan to Richland County North Dakota as evidenced by their listing in the 1885 ND Census Records.

Also, the last name was spelled WittmanN (2 Ns, not one) on the tombstone. However, our family now spells it with one N.

OLD POST:I am in the process of researching my family roots. My great great grandparents were Michael Bernhard Wittman and Rosella Reidel. I have no birthdate or marriage date. It is unknown if they were married in the US or in Baveria. They had the following children whom were born in Sheboygan Wisconsin: William (died young, wife Abby, daughter
Irene), Mary, Carrie, Annie, Bernhard "Barney" (my great grandpa), DOB 12-2-1872, and Rose. My great grandpa, "Barney" married Maria "Lizzy" Beckers (place unknown) on 1-21-1895.

I hope I am able to link up to somebody who
may have more info on this. Thanks in advance!
