Nancy Ellen Winters was married to Miles Anderson Colp.
She was the daughter of Mary Hestand Winters and William
Henry Winters. Miles Anderson Colp is the son of Milton
Stewart Colp and Lousia M. Dillard. I am kin too them
throught the Hestand and Colp. My great-grandmother was
the daughter of Milton Stewart Colp and My other great-great
grandmother Margaret Hestand Pitcock was a sister of Mary
Hestand Winters. Miles Anderson Colp got killed at logging
camp in Ada, Illinois. They had four children: (1) Joseph Colp;
who died young, (2) Laura Colp who married a Arnold and
lived Makando, Illinois, (3) Iva M. Colp who married to Jerry
Green and lived in Marquand, Missouri, and(4) Maggie Colp
married a Walker and lived in Marquand Missouri. That is
all I know about this family and I have been hunting them too.

William H Winters was born 1814 in Cumberland Co., KY. His brother Peter Hammer Winters was born 1827 in Monroe Co., KY.
William married Mary Hestand (daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Sprowl) in 1839 Jackson Co., TN. They lived in Tomkinville, Monroe Co., KY till about 1850 when they first went to Salem, Dent Co., MO and then to Williamson Co.,IL they had the following children: Elizabeth 1840-1884, James 1842-1856, John R. 1844-1864, Peter 1847-1857, Linsy 1850-1919, Nancy Ellen 1852-1895, Julia Ann 1855-1879, and Samuel 1858-1879
Mary died while William was away in the Civil War. Laurinda Winters Bell took in William's children and raised them as her own.
William died 1864 in Rome, GA of disease, he had been in a hospital in Rome for about two months before he died.

Peter Hammer Winters b in Monroe Co., KY is next found in 1850 in Grayson Co., TX. (according to a letter he wrote William. He wants William to come to TX, but says he will be going to CA soon. The next letter in 1855 Peter tells William to come to CA. He is a miner in Placer Co., CA and has married Rachel Cash and has a young daughter Sarah Elizabeth. One more daughter is born to this couple Mary Ellen 1857.Rachel dies in 1861.

Peter joins the Union Army but sees very littke action and is sick most of the time. When he is discharged he takes the girls to Oak Run Shasta Co., CA and marries Pheobe Jane Chapman. They have the following children:
Martha, Rebecca, John, James, William, Charles, Laurinda, Robert, Benjamin, Maud, Peter, and Paul

Does this help? Let me know if you are related to any of these.

Regarding the siblings of William and Peter, I only know one by name and that is Laurinda b 1840 and d 1886 in Williamson Co., IL. I'm looking for at least 4 more sisters and a brother. (according to a 1830 census record for Henry Winters of Monroe Co., KY)
I believe Henry is William, Peter and Laurinda's father. I do not know what the mother's name is or if Laurinda is a half sister (the age difference between William b 1816 and Laurinda b 1840 is considerable)
Henry was in Cumberland Co.,KY in 1810-1820 and then moved to Monroe Co., 1823-1830 (Tax Records)but I cannot find a trace of him, Peter or Laurinda after that, till Peter pops up in TX in 1850 and Laurinda pops up in Williamson Co., IL as a servent in 1860. Within the next she marries Stanley Bell b 1816 in NC. They live their entire marriage in Blairsville, Williamson Co., IL and have 15 children of which few reach adulthood. It was said she was tall with pitch black hair and was Indian.

Family lore says that their is Indian blood in the family, but I have not found any if there is.

I believe Frederick Winters of Cumberland and Monroe Co., Ky is the father of Henry and have more information on him is you think it applies to your family.

Do you have any info on a John A. Winters? He may have been the father of my g-g-grandfather, John William Winters. John William was born in 1852 in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. His mother may have been a full blood Cherokee. John A. Winters apparently left his family in Arkansas and went to California to mine gold when John William was a small child.

Sorry, I don't have a John A. Winters.

William's son John R. born 1844 died 1864 I don't know where he died or how.

Peter's son John Henry was born in 1871 in Shasta Co., CA and married Irena Belle Stevens in 1897 CA.
