Was doing on line shopping and found a shop that has tons of photographs from probably the late 1800s to early 1900s of a Winkelman family living in Nebraska. Voss, Kaplan, Clausen, Odon were other names on some of the pictures. The URL I found them at was:
https://www.etsy.com/shop/peachesandcorn
I have set up a timeline for name usage.
census 1860-winkleman
1870-winkleman
1880-winkleman
1886-allen-mary's marriage
1896-allen-malinda 2nd marriage
1904-allen-harvey"s marriage
1916-allen-harry's marriage
census 1940-winkleman
It looks like they used allen when it was needed to be legal.
I don't think eli was in the service. In 1860 he was single in 1870he already had two children. Harvey was my grandfather, how I wished I had asked more questions when someone had answers. My mother told me it had something to do with an adoption?? Freda allen mckeen

Winkelmans- Baltimore/Wilmington

Hi all--
I am interested in learning more about my Winkleman roots but got stuck! Andrew Winkelman was born around 1814 in Burkersdorf, Germany, and came to the US sometime in the 1850s, and the story I'm told is that he "jumped ship." I have an 1850 census record from Baltimore showing his wife, Elizabeth Knotts (sp) Winkelman and their daughter, Margaret Winkelman, living with Anton Winkelman, age 62. I'm assuming Anton in Andrew's father.... but Andrew is not listed and I can find no other records of Anton Winkelman anywhere!

Moreover, the next record I find of the family ANYWHERE is not until 1880 in Wilmington, DE in 1880-- Andrew and Elizabeth in their 60s with their son, Andrew and daughter, Lucy. (Margaret, who I know was a maid, was not living at home at the time.)

Does anyone have any suggestions for finding more about the family in Germany (I don't speak German, nor can I afford to visit Burkersdorf anytime soon), and/or about finding out what happened to the the family between the 1850 census and the 1880 census? It's like they completely disappear!!

Any help greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!
I am also researching Eli Winkelman/Allen. I do not know when or why the name was changed to Allen. I have searched the census records and will continue to research. But if you have something that can jump start this search, I would very much appreciate your help.
I did find a military record :
Name: Eli Allen
Birth Date: abt 1835
Age: 27
Enlistment Date: 1862
Military Unit: Sixth Battalion, Cavalry AND Seventh Cavalry, A-F
If this is the same man, I will pay to look at the original record. Perhaps there is more info. I do not have his parents names or his actual death date, but his wife shows to be a widow in the 1900 census.
One Ancestry member shows a David Harrison 1877.
The 1900 census also shows wife, Lydia with 5 children and 4 living. Because I did not see any other mention of David Harrison, I thought he might be the deceased child.....
Susan

Baltimore Winkelmans - Please help!

My great grandfather, Lawrence Arthur Winkelman (b 1885)proves very elusive! Here's what I know about him: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/25843692/person/1728092462. He either died or left my great grandmother in 1922 0r 1923 and I can find no record of him after the 1920 NY Census. His family was from Baltimore (his mother was a Merrikan), but he moved to Brooklyn where he married. He brought with him a young son who was in some way impaired. I can find no mention of the birth of this son or who the mother is. Any information or resources you can suggest to help illuminate this family mystery would be greatly appreciated! I'm new to geneology!

Hello Milton, I come from the line of Frederick Winkelman to John Winkelman to Benjamin Franklin Winkelman to Benjamin Douty Winkelman to Benjamin Theodore Winkelman AKA Bennie Lloyd Winkleman to me Betty Jean Winkleman. Now I'm BJ Christopher and live in Yukon. We have an annual family reunion for descendents of John on every 4th July. He was very proud of his service in the Civil War and asked Ben Douty Winkelman to remember him that way. He was an abolishinist in Missouri, then Kansas. Fought in many battles. He was a cook and marched all over the South. Marched with Sherman into Atlanta. Got foot rot in Louisiana. Had diabetes. Liberated some imprisoned Yankees which enforced his family belief in freedom and democracy. His grandfather left Prussia because of the oppression. We met your 2gfather Levi when we were younger. My oldest brother Ben remembers him well. My father of course knew him very well, but he died in 1981. If you have facebook, we can add you to the family list. Also, I have lots of information about the family, but am just now putting it into ancestry.com. It will be available later. Our other cousins Lynn and Keith both have much information that I don't have.

Sue,

I am glad to get in touch with you finally. I have seen many post from you on Ancestry sites. "My" Lorenzo would be my great great grandfather. My great grandmother was Sadie Winkelman. We must be cousins somehow, right??? Anyway, I would love to trade info with you on Lorenzos family. I am just getting started in my search, and had toyed with the idea of trying the different spelling of Winkelman, but hadn't gone there yet. Do you still live in Minnesota? I grew up in Minneapolis, but now live in Blaine. Thanks for any help you may have.

Heather Jorgenson

Hi Heather;

My maiden name is Winkelman and my Dad's name was Lorenzo, but not that Lorenzo. My Dad was your Lorenzo's nephew and namesake.

Try doing most of your research under WinkLEman, which is what it was before my Grandfather, Oliver. Oliver & your Lorenzo were Brothers.

I have next to nothing on Elmira, except her first name. But can help with Lorenzo's ancestry if you need it.

Sue

Hi Heather;

I also grew up in Minneapolis, but left there in '69, after high school. I went to California first, married and had my kids there, then went to Nevada, then to Oklahoma for a job with a major airline. I've been in Oklahoma since 1978. I'll get together some information to send you. It's a bit much for this message board though. What e-mail address can I send to? I'll make a genealogy report from family tree maker and send that to you in a download, if that's okay?

Sue

I may have something that will help you on John and Nancy. If what I found out in researching my line is correct, John H. Winkelman would be my great-great-great grandfather. According to what I have, I'm connected to his son Benjamin Frederick, then to his son Levi Frederick Winkelman. Levi died in 1987 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where I was born. His son was my grandfather, Roy Alvin Winkelman. This line is in Oklahoma. I was born and raised in Shawnee, but I now live in Oklahoma City. My dad is in Enid. I'd like to know more about the generations after my grandfather, especially.

This is really cool because when I started working on my family tree, I didn't have much information, names, etc. to go on after my great-grandfather Levi. I never knew if he had brothers or if my grandfather had brothers. I'd like to find out more about these other lines and where they are. Just to give you an idea of the Oklahoma line, I'm originally from Shawnee, which is about 40 miles east of Oklahoma City. My dad is in Enid, my uncles and my aunt are also in the general OKC metro area. I'm the only child from my parents, but my dad remarried, & I have a sister from that marriage. She lives in Elk City. I'm curious if there are any other lines that are here that I don't know about. I think it would be cool to meet other relatives I didn't know about. I actually surprised my dad earlier this week when I told him what I had found. I'm excited to find out more information about this. Thanks.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply. I use the public library to look in on my emails. How are we connected through the Winkelman family line? I had gotten alot of information from Kay in Wisconsin over the years. Fill me in on your line. My earliest "JOHN" Winkelman came from Pennsylvania. He and his boys were "pump makers" by trade, according to the census records. Hope to hear from you. Deborah.

Hi Holly;

Can you tell what information you may already have on your Winkelman family?
You already have some basics - where they are from (did they always live there), that they had 16 children (do you have any names and locations) and your grandparents names.

Do you have any birth or death dates for your grandparents or any of the 16 children?

My great-great-great grandmother Barbara Riegel was married to Jacob Winkelman. Jacob died while still in Pennsylvania but Barbara came west with her son. They went to Illinois and then on to southern Iowa. I have been trying forever to find where she was buried. We all know your frustration of looking for family and it's like they didn't exist.

I'd be happy to try and help you.
Kay
